White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting: Timeline traces how suspect’s alleged cross-country plan unfolded
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner quickly devolved into chaos Saturday as shots rang out inside the Washington, D.C., hotel hosting the annual gala while President Donald Trump was in attendance.
The suspect has been identified as Cole Allen, 31, of Torrance, Calif., with law enforcement adding that he prepared a manifesto and shared posts to social media outlining his intent to target Trump and other administration officials, according to authorities.
Allen’s sister, Avriana Allen, told Secret Service and Montgomery County Police that her brother had a history of making radical statements and previously mentioned a plan to do "something" to fix what he believed to be issues with today’s society, authorities said.

Allen allegedly stormed the Washington Hilton’s lobby while armed with weapons within minutes of the event kicking off, and was quickly apprehended by members of the Secret Service.
He is currently in custody and authorities are expected to file federal charges against him Monday.
Here is a timeline of events leading up to the shooting:
Allen legally purchases a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol, according to the Associated Press. He purchased a 12-gauge shotgun two years later.

His sister told authorities the weapons were purchased from Cap Tactical Firearms and stored in their parents’ home, who were unaware of the guns being kept there.
She also revealed her brother was a regular visitor to the shooting range, was a member of a group called "The Wide Awakes" and had previously attended a "No Kings" protest in California.
Allen allegedly travels by train from California to Washington, D.C., making one stop in Chicago, according to authorities.
Allen checks into the Washington Hilton one day before the April 25 gala dinner, sources told Fox News.
The 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner begins, with Trump taking his seat alongside Vice President J.D. Vance and first lady Melania Trump. Several other administration officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel and House Speaker Mike Johnson, are also in attendance.

Before the shooting, Allen allegedly sends a written manifesto outlining his intent to target Trump administration officials to members of his family, according to law enforcement sources.
Shots ring out on the hotel’s terrace level, one floor below the hotel lobby and one floor above the International Ballroom, where hundreds of journalists and cabinet officials were enjoying the start of the program.
According to authorities, Allen charged through a security checkpoint in the hotel’s lobby area armed with firearms and knives, striking one officer in his ballistic vest.
Allen is intercepted by members of the Secret Service as they return fire and tackle him to the ground.
Within seconds, Trump and other high-level members of the federal government are rushed to safety by the Secret Service, as journalists and other attendees take shelter under tables in the ballroom.
The officer who was struck is later transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
Trump makes his first comments after the shooting on Truth Social, commending officers for acting "quickly and bravely." Trump also added that "the shooter has been apprehended," and that he had recommended the event resume.

Trump makes a second post to Truth Social, revealing that law enforcement had asked attendees to evacuate the building, as was consistent with protocol.
After the shooting, Allen’s brother contacts the New London Police Department in Connecticut regarding his alleged manifesto.
The police said in a statement they were contacted at 10:49 p.m. but someone who wanted to share information related to it, and the department said it then immediately alerted federal law enforcement, the Associated Press reported.
Allen initially speaks with police before refusing to talk as of Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Authorities execute search warrants Sunday in Los Angeles and Washington, including at a hotel room where the suspect was staying, Blanche said. Investigators review devices and communications recovered during the searches.
Blanche added that it appears Allen bought the guns in "the past couple of years."
"That could be another reason why he traveled by train because he had the firearms with him, but I’m speculating there," he said.

The Houston Rockets will be without one of their All-Stars as they face a potential sweep to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.
Kevin Durant is not expected to suit up for the Rockets in Game 4 of the team’s first round series with the Lakers, according to ESPN.
Durant is sitting out his second straight game after suffering a sprained left ankle. He was also diagnosed with a bone bruise in his ankle, further testing revealed.

This injury is usually a two-to-three-week recovery timeline, ESPN added after speaking with sources. Houston has tried "around-the-clock treatment" for Durant just to get him on the court, but doctors haven’t cleared him to play.
Durant’s injury occurred during the second half of the Game 2 loss Tuesday to the Lakers, 101-94. Durant was slow to get off the court, and swelling occurred in the following days, forcing him to miss Game 3.
After discovering the bone bruise, the Rockets understood why Durant had further swelling and stiffness in the ankle compared to a regular sprain, per ESPN.
Still, Durant is helping his teammates in the film room, as they reviewed their play against the Lakers ahead of a win-or-go-home scenario on Sunday night. Durant was also at the Rockets’ facility get his treatment done.
While Durant had been healthy throughout his first year with the Rockets, this postseason has been a disaster thus far. He missed Game 1 due to a right knee contusion suffered in practice. It was described as a "tender" bruise in an "awkward spot" above his knee, which severely limited his ability to move.
The Lakers went on to win Game 1, 107-98, but Durant was able to suit up for Game 2. However, after pouring in seven of his 12 jumpers and eight of his nine free throws for 23 points in 41 minutes, his injury came late in the second half, and he hasn’t seen the court since.
Meanwhile, LeBron James, playing without his key teammates Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves thus far in this series, has been leading the way for Los Angeles to a stunning 3-0 start in this series.
The Lakers are hoping they won’t have to return to Los Angeles for a Game 5 in this series, which would allow everyone, including those injured on their bench, to get right for the next series if they can get the job done on Sunday night.
Houston will once again look to players like Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Şengün to keep the season alive.

King Charles, Queen Camilla to move ahead with US trip after White House Correspondents' Dinner shooting
King Charles III and Queen Camilla are moving ahead with their U.S. visit in the wake of the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C.
President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, first lady Melania Trump and other top officials were evacuated from the Washington Hilton Hotel ballroom on Saturday night after a gunman exchanged fire with Secret Service agents in the lobby before being subdued and taken into custody.
On Monday, Charles and Camilla are set to arrive in Washington D.C. for a four-day trip, marking their first visit to the U.S. as British monarchs.
In a statement to Fox News Digital on Sunday, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed that the shooting has not derailed the royals' visit.
"Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned," the spokesperson said. "The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow," the spokesperson added.
Fox News Digital understands that the overall plan remains unchanged, with only minor adjustments to one or two scheduled engagements.
Earlier on Sunday, a palace spokesperson shared a statement with People magazine regarding talks that were being held about the upcoming visit.

"A number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with U.S. colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the Visit."
According to People, Charles and Camilla privately reached out to Trump and Melania following the shooting.

While speaking with Fox News anchor Shannon Bream on "Fox News Sunday," Trump said that the royals' trip to the U.S. was moving forward as planned.
"King Charles is coming and he's a great guy and we look forward to it," Trump said. "He's really a fantastic person and a tremendous representative."
Trump went on to praise Charles, referencing the monarch's ongoing battle with an unspecified type of cancer for which he has been receiving treatment since February 2024.

"He is brave, you know, he's got something that's very tough to fight," Trump said. "He's got a problem with, as you know, a very well documented problem with his health. And he represents his nation like nobody else can do it."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among the world leaders who expressed their support for Trump following the attack at the gala dinner.
"I am shocked by the scenes at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington overnight," Starmer wrote in an X post. "Any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. titutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. It is a huge relief that @POTUS, the First Lady and all those attending are safe."

On Sunday, Prince Albert of Monaco and his wife Princess Charlene shared a message of solidarity with Trump after the shooting.
"To Mr. Donald J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America," Albert began in his Instagram post.
"Mr. President, It is with emotion that I learnt of the events which took place last night in Washington, on the sidelines of the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner," he wrote. "I wish to convey my relief at knowing that you, together with the First Lady and all those in attendance, are safe and unharmed following this act of exceptional gravity.

Authorities have identified the suspect in the shooting as 31-year-old Cole Allen, of Torrance, Calif., adding that he prepared a manifesto outlining his intent and shared anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on social media.
As the WHCA was underway, Allen allegedly rushed a Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton while armed with multiple weapons and opened fire, striking a Secret Service officer in his ballistic vest.
Agents returned fire and tackled Allen to the ground. The suspect and the injured officer were transported to a hospital. The Secret Service agent is expected to make a full recovery and was released from the hospital Sunday.

Allen is facing federal charges including assaulting a federal officer and using a firearm during a crime of violence, with additional charges possible.
Charles and Camilla's visit to the U.S. is in celebration of the 250th anniversary of America's independence and includes stops in Washington D.C., New York and Virginia. The late Queen Elizabeth was the last British monarch to visit the U.S., traveling to the country in 2007 to celebrate the anniversary of the Jamestown settlement.

"The visit will be an opportunity to recognise the shared history of our two nations; the breadth of the economic, security and cultural relationship that has developed since then; and the deep people-to-people connections which unite communities," reads a press release from the U.K. Embassy.
After arriving in Washington D.C., Charles and Camilla will be welcomed by Trump and Melania and attend a private tea at the White House. Their schedule includes a ceremonial military review, cultural engagements, a garden party at the British ambassador’s residence and bilateral meetings, with the King also set to deliver a rare address to a joint session of Congress — only the second by a British monarch.
The couple will later attend a state dinner at the White House before departing the capital the following day, after taking part in a wreath-laying ceremony honoring fallen service members and the longstanding U.S.-U.K. military alliance.
Beyond Washington, the royals; trip expands to New York and Virginia, where the royals will visit the 9/11 Memorial, community and cultural projects, and attend events highlighting U.S.-U.K. ties and shared history.

DAVID MARCUS: Bill Maher's no Republican, he's just a rare Democrat who thinks
Bill MaherBill Maher's "Real Time" show on HBO has become something of a unicorn in the modern political media landscape, a place where liberals and conservatives can actually have substantive conversations rather than simply sling mud.
A big part of what allows for this unique discourse is that Maher is an unconventional Democrat. He's something of a dinosaur, with a political view that seems stuck in the tar pits of 1990s Bill Clintonism. He is in some ways the avatar of the Democratic Party that was.
Maher remains pro-Israel, regularly rolls his eyes at the excesses of wokism and the trans movement, has a friendly respect for President Donald Trump, with whom he has dined, and in general is a poster child of "I didn’t leave the party, the party left me." He's even friends with Kid Rock!
This has led many conservatives to suggest that Maher is a better fit in the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. Jump in, the water is fine, they say.

But this misses an essential point. Maher is not a Republican, he is a Democrat. Conservatives should be rooting for him to influence his party in positive ways, not to abandon it.
Maher always makes me think of my cousin Jimmy, who has been a big fan for decades. Jimmy is in many ways the quintessential Pennsylvania Democrat. He is successful, has a beautiful Catholic family, and like me, grew up believing in the Teamsters and the pope.
I asked Jimmy what he liked so much about Maher and he told me, "I like Bill Maher a lot because he calls a spade a spade, based on facts and science and not ideological craziness. He calls out the crazy for what it is. I like that he does it regardless of who he’s talking about, left or right."
This is maybe a bit more of a glowing review than I would give to Maher, but it's not far off the mark. More importantly, based on conversations I have with Democrats around the country, more of them think like Maher, than think like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez D-NY, or commie podcaster Hasan Piker.
In this way, Maher is something like a focus group of one.
And it’s not just Maher clinging to the principles of the old Party of Jefferson and Jackson. Sen. John Fetterman D-Pa., also insists on being an old-school Democrat rather than changing sides and joining the GOP.
But honestly, for all the attacks against Fetterman from the left of his party, there is no major policy issue that the senator supports that was not a mainstream Democratic position as recently as 2020.
The plain truth here is that Maher, my cousin Jimmy and Fetterman are never going to be Republicans. It's like asking Magic Johnson to play for the Celtics. But they may be the voices that bring their party, and our nation, back from the edge.
On Saturday night, at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, a third attempt was made on the life of President Trump. It almost feels normal at this point, but it is not normal, and while everyone for the next 12 hours will discuss taking down the temperature, Maher really does it.
Because of the power of the presidency under our Constitution, we will always have two parties, one that controls the White House, and another composed of everyone else. It behooves all of us for both to be measured, responsible and nonviolent.

Maher does our nation inestimably more good as the reasonable, old-timey, joint-smoking Democrat than he does as a turncoat nouveau Trumper, and as beacon of sanity in a party flinging itself wildly to the left, he helps everyone.
So let’s stop trying to turn Maher into a Republican. We don’t need to chant "One of us!" because he is not one of us. He is a Democrat, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Perhaps the greatest testament to the importance of Maher is his remarkable staying power. In a media ecosystem in which political shows and anchors rise and fall like so many ships in a storm, he has been a Rock of Gibraltar.
Just as for decades "The McLaughlin Group" was the space for the right and left to respectfully cross rhetorical swords, today it is "Real Time" that fills this vital role, and for better or worse, it only really works, quite specifically, because Bill Maher is, and always will be, a Democrat.
Dodgers fire back at Cubs manager Craig Counsell over criticism of 'bizarre' Shohei Ohtani rule
One of the more unexpected storylines in the early portion of the 2026 Major League Baseball season has been the complaints from opposing managers about Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani.
Ohtani, you might remember, started his career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2018. While with the Angels, he was a two-way player who both pitched and hit. The league, attempting to ensure that the additional value of a two-way player, particularly the most marketable and talented two-way player, would be properly recognized, enacted a rule ensuring that any two-way player would be able to stay in the game as a designated hitter after exiting as a pitcher.
Essentially, treating that player as two separate entities. To use Ohtani as an example, Ohtani the hitter, and Ohtani the pitcher. That rule was put in place in 2019 to create a template for him or any other two-way players that emerge.
Then, in 2022, when MLB moved to 26 players, and enacted roster restrictions, 13 pitchers and 13 hitters, in order to maintain the importance of starting pitching, they set up another rule that meant designated two-way players who met certain criteria would not count against the maximum number of pitchers allowed on a roster. This, again, was enacted when Ohtani was with the Angels.
For some reason, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell decided to criticize these years-old rules in April 2026. And in a new interview, one of the Dodgers’ top executives addressed Counsell’s comments and didn’t seem too pleased with them.
In a new interview with AM 570, the Dodgers’ home radio station in LA, the team’s president of Baseball Operations was asked about Counsell’s comments by broadcaster David Vassegh. Specifically, why he thought Counsell brought it up now, years into this process. And in response, he brought up that the rule was discussed with input from the teams themselves, making the criticism even more bizarre.
"I don’t know," Friedman said. "It felt very random and strange to me that he felt the need to bring it up. And when Shohei was on the Angels and MLB was considering this, they reached out to a bunch of teams, us included. And I said, ‘look, from a competitive standpoint as the Dodgers, I don’t love it, but wearing my industry hat and what’s best for Major League Baseball, it’s to do everything we can for Shohei Ohtani to be in and stay in games.’"
"So that’s the part of him being able to stay in the game when he pitches. When he comes off the mound, the old rule would have been, then the hitter has to come out as well. But I was able to look at what is best for the industry and Shohei playing, and playing more often and staying in games is what is best for this game and best for the fans and everything else."

If the teams were contacted about this rule, and the league implemented it after considering their feedback, why the complaining now? That’s unclear, but one of the big problems seems to be a complete misunderstanding of what the rule actually is and the advantage the Dodgers have. Jim Bowden, for example, a former general manager himself and current baseball commentator, apparently got it completely wrong.
"So that was when he was with the Angels, and as far as the 13 pitcher rule, again, it is more that we have 13 pitchers…I had to clarify this with Jim Bowden, who said that we have nine relievers…We don’t have nine relievers, we have eight relievers just like everyone else, we have five starters, like everyone else," Friedman explained. "It’s just when Shohei is able and the rest makes sense, Shohei pitches also. It is not that we are carrying an extra reliever relative to others.
"So it’s certainly an advantage but it should be an advantage. What Shohei does and what he is capable of is so unique, it should be rewarded, it should be celebrated. And everyone knew the Shohei rules and had an equal opportunity to sign him two years ago. So I’m not sure where the Cubs were in that process, or what Counsell’s thoughts were on it then, but that seems like more of the relevant time to voice it than now."
This is what made Counsell’s comments, and the ensuing fan outrage, so odd. Ohtani’s unique value is that he can hit and pitch, at a high level. That advantage would exist regardless of roster limits or restrictions. They don’t get to carry an "extra" reliever because of Ohtani. They get a benefit when he makes his once-a-week scheduled start. And again, this advantage would exist regardless, because no other team has a starter who can have a 50/50 season and put up a 0.38 ERA in the first month of the year. Which is why he got $700 million and fully deserved it. The Cubs have plenty of money; they could have signed him and taken advantage of that rule. Or find a two-way player of their own to develop. They didn’t, and now they’re mad about it, years after the rule was enacted and benefited the Angels. Weird.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said Sunday that the shooting at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents' Dinner underscored the need to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), arguing that law enforcement officers performed "flawlessly" despite uncertainty surrounding their paychecks.
The congressman cast blame on Democrats for "refusing to fund some of the most important law enforcement officers in our country," like the Secret Service, TSA and Coast Guard, on "The Sunday Briefing."
"This is a big, big deal that these Democrats are literally playing with the safety of Americans — by the way, Republican, Democrat and other, it doesn't matter what your political perspective is. It's about Americans' safety," he said.
"The fact that [Secret Service] performed so flawlessly last night while under the stress of wondering whether they're going to continue to get paid and all the rest of it is even more impressive," he added.
The shooting comes amid a more than two-month DHS funding stalemate in Congress. Democrats are seeking changes to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations and won't vote for a budget without guarantees thereof, while Republicans are turning to alternative funding methods to continue enforcement as is.
Emmer blamed Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for putting a stop to the most recent funding bill that he said was supported by Republicans and Democrats in both chambers of Congress by "[pulling] out two pieces of the bill and [making] that a political issue."

He added that it was the "wrong time to be playing with American safety from the minority."
Emmer himself was seen leaving the ballroom with assistance amid the chaos that followed the gunfire. To put to rest rumors that he may have been injured in the incident, he clarified that, because his leg is in a cast, he had been using a mobility scooter at the event.
"But you couldn't keep it on the floor because there were 3,000 people there and it was so tight. So they had to take the scooter elsewhere. And obviously, when this thing broke, they told us we had to get out. So I had a couple human crutches that were helping me escape out the side door to get to the scooter, which ultimately I rode out."
The suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting told law enforcement after his arrest Saturday night that he intended to target Trump administration officials, senior federal law enforcement sources confirmed to Fox News.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, of Torrance, Calif., adding that he prepared a manifesto outlining his intent and shared anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric on social media.

It’s a pretty strong vote of confidence — and one Pavia probably needed after the last few days.
Just months ago, the Vanderbilt standout was one of the best players in college football. Pavia threw for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns during a breakout 2025 season that earned him a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist.
And yet, when the 2026 NFL Draft came and went, Pavia never heard his name called.
That’s not something you see often. The last Heisman finalist to go undrafted was Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch in 2014. And you’re looking at only a handful over the last three decades.
To be fair, there were concerns.
Pavia measured in at just 5-foot-10, and at 24 years old, he’s already older than many incoming rookies. Teams have also reportedly questioned his temperament — something that became part of his flashy on-field persona over the past couple of seasons.

Still, the production was there. The accolades were there. And usually, that’s enough to at least hear your name on Day 3.
Sanders, of course, understands how unpredictable the draft process can be.
His son, Shedeur Sanders, was widely projected as a first-round pick before sliding all the way to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL Draft. That fall turned into one of the biggest talking points of that draft cycle, and it clearly stuck with Deion.
So when Pavia found himself in a similar — albeit more extreme — situation, Coach Prime stepped in to improve morale.
Now, the path forward is uncertain for Pavia. Whether that means catching on as an undrafted free agent, earning a camp invite or taking a less conventional route to the league, he’s got work to do.
But at the very least, he’s got one very high-profile believer in his corner.

Further signs of turmoil are emerging in Iran’s U.S. negotiating team as hardliner Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf looks set to be replaced by a veteran conservative known for rejecting nuclear concessions, according to reports.
Iran International reported April 24 that Saeed Jalili, 60 — who already leads what has been described as a "shadow government" — is expected to succeed Ghalibaf following his sudden departure amid internal disputes.
Jalili also heads Iran’s ultra-hardline faction known as the Stability Front (Paydari), which is known to be a "bastion of ultraconservatism in Iran," according to reports.
Ali Safavi, an official with the Iranian opposition coalition, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), told Fox News Digital that Jalili "has evolved from a nuclear negotiator to an influential actor within the regime."

Ghalibaf was reportedly forced to step down after attempting to bring the nuclear issue into talks with Washington, a move that triggered backlash within Iran’s political establishment.
President Donald Trump had called off plans for U.S. envoys to travel to Pakistan for peace talks with Iran on April 25.
The rivalry between Jalili and Ghalibaf is said to span more than a decade and intensified during the 2024 elections, when Jalili refused to step aside, contributing to the victory of President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Safavi said, "The increased visibility of latent divisions stems from recurring nationwide uprisings, deep economic crises and the pressures of war, all of which have intensified internal feuding.
"Far from signaling transformation, these developments reflect accelerating erosion and mounting pressure, deepening fractures and leaving the regime ever weaker and more vulnerable," he added.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also seeking a continued leading role in negotiations, highlighting competing centers of influence over Iran’s diplomatic strategy, sources said.
Araghchi is in Islamabad, Pakistan, after returning from a short trip to Muscat, Oman, where he is holding high-level diplomatic talks on the conflict. Reports indicate Araghchi will travel to Moscow.
Jalili’s potential appointment, however, signals a hardening of Iran’s stance, with more emphasis on resistance over compromise.
"Within this regime, there are a number of constants espoused by all factions," Safavi said before highlighting that these were "repression, the export of terrorism and the pursuit of nuclear weapons."
"The factions all ultimately move along a common path: the preservation of power. They differ in methods, not in objectives," Safavi cautioned.
Jalili, meanwhile, served as Iran’s top nuclear negotiator from 2007 to 2013 under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and later ran for president three times. He also served as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
A former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Jalili lost his right leg at 21 during the Iran-Iraq War, earning him the title of "Living Martyr".
The Paydari Front, which he is associated with, opposes engagement with the West — particularly the 2015 nuclear deal — and advocates a doctrine of "active resistance."
During Hassan Rouhani’s presidency, Jalili also established a "shadow government" to counter the administration’s policies, especially the nuclear deal.
On April 7, he wrote on X: "Yes — ‘infrastructure’ is on the verge of collapse; the infrastructure of domination and the American order. And after that, a better foundation will be built."
A day earlier, he posted: "‘Shut up’ is not the appropriate response to Trump’s ramblings; let him speak more. Nothing is more effective in laying bare the true nature of the United States than Trump’s outbursts."
"In dealing with this regime," Safavi said, "we must bear in mind that in the 45 years since the mullahs consolidated their rule in 1981 by crushing all peaceful political life, so-called reformists have governed for nearly half that time — presiding over some of its darkest crimes."
"These include the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners, the assassination of dissidents abroad, the chain murders of intellectuals inside Iran and the relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons."
