5 popular hangover myths that don't work after holiday drinking, according to experts
From office parties to family gatherings and New Year's Eve celebrations, the holiday season is often a time for overindulging — and for waking up the next morning scrambling for a hangover fix.
While social media can be chock-full of supposed cures — from greasy breakfasts and "hair of the dog" cocktails to sweat-it-out exercises — experts say most hangover remedies don't address how the body actually processes alcohol.
"Most hangover 'cures' fail because they treat the liver like a sponge rather than a chemical processing plant that it is," Dr. Hillary Lin, a New York City physician, told Fox News Digital.

A hangover is your body's response to the buildup of harmful byproducts as it clears alcohol from your system, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The reality, experts say, is that there is no instant fix.
"You can't biohack a hangover once it starts," Lin said.
Fox News Digital spoke with experts to debunk five popular myths and reveal what actually works.
Having some "hair of the dog that bit you" — or drinking more alcohol to relieve a hangover — only "kicks the can down the road," Lin said.
While it may dull symptoms briefly, it gives the liver more work to do, said Alexa Ryan, a California neurotherapist and clinical dietitian nutritionist.

"It doesn't address the underlying dehydration, inflammation or toxic alcohol byproducts," she said.
Adding other substances can make matters worse, according to Ian Anderson, co-founder of Sunnyside, a mindful drinking app.
"Tobacco smoking can increase the severity of your hangover, and using alcohol with cannabis may lead to even poorer memory, focus and cognitive function," said Anderson, who is based in California.
A heavy breakfast will just sit in an already irritated stomach and slow down digestion, Lin said.
"By the time you wake up, the alcohol has long since left your stomach," she said. "There is literally nothing left to 'soak up.'"
Experts agree it's best to prioritize eating before drinking in order to slow the absorption rate of alcohol into your bloodstream.
"The idea of soaking up alcohol only applies before or during drinking," Ryan added.

Certain foods may support hangover recovery, including eggs, water-rich fruits, bananas and nuts — though experts warn that evidence is limited.
Many people reach for coffee or lemon water, hoping to flush out alcohol, but detoxification doesn't work that way, experts say.
"By the time you wake up with a hangover, alcohol has already disrupted sleep, irritated the stomach lining, altered blood sugar regulation and been metabolized into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that drives most hangover symptoms," Ryan said. "Coffee and lemon juice don't accelerate alcohol metabolism."
Anderson added that coffee can slow down rehydration and increase blood pressure.

"This can worsen a headache and leave you more dehydrated, anxious and jittery than before," he said. "Plain water is your best friend when you've overindulged."
Not all patches or supplements are created equal when it comes to hangovers, and experts caution that most products act too late to make a meaningful difference.

Some emerging probiotics, however, work differently from typical hangover remedies, Lin noted. Rather than trying to support the liver after alcohol is already absorbed, they're designed to break down acetaldehyde in the gut before it enters the bloodstream.
Otherwise, Lin recommends drinking a high-quality electrolyte mix before bed.
Alcohol is broken down by the liver at a steady pace, meaning exercise can't speed up how quickly your body clears it, experts say.
"You can't sweat out alcohol. Your liver has to metabolize it," Ryan said.
"Exercising while you're hung over can worsen dehydration, increase dizziness or nausea, and place extra strain on the body. Anything that adds more stress to the body usually backfires."
Despite countless claims, experts say there is simply no proven cure-all.

The most effective approach, Anderson said, is drinking less and avoiding binge-drinking — which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines as having five or more standard drinks on a single occasion for men and four for women.
"A really successful tip to limit hangovers is to alternate each drink with water and/or non-alcoholic drinks," he added.
Nonetheless, health experts say no amount of alcohol is completely safe — and even low levels increase the risk of cancer.
But when it's too late, recovery requires rest, hydration and time.
"Prioritizing fluids with electrolytes, eating a small, balanced meal, getting rest and allowing time for the liver to complete detoxification are most effective," Ryan said.

Defiant TPUSA leader won't quit despite chapter facing harassment, hostility after Kirk assassination
PHOENIX — After a string of harassment, intimidation and destruction in the wake of the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a leader at one of the organization's college chapters refuses to back down.
Amy Rose Lombardo is the event coordinator for TPUSA's Northern Arizona University chapter. She told Fox News Digital at AmericaFest, Turning Point's annual conference, that she and her fellow group members have faced an onslaught of incivility since Kirk's midday murder during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
"So we have seen a few more dramatic protesting strategies," Lombardo said. "For example, really the first one that we ever got was a woman came by the table and dropped off a note that was a depiction of Charlie's murder and the comments on it free speech and only a good Nazi is a dead Nazi."
That note also depicted blood coming out of the neck of a person holding a microphone.

In a second incident, a woman was caught on camera swiping the contents off of the chapter's table during a tabling event, and then stealing a foam board depicting Ronald Reagan.
"With the table swiper, to be honest with you, that person just came out of nowhere. She was walking back from a direction that normally we wouldn't see people, but she went and got food at some sort of area on the opposite side of where we were tabling, came around, and you'll hear in the video my sister says, 'hey, how's it going?'" Lombardo recalled.
"And she smiles at us and swipes the table, and leaves," Lombardo continued.

Lombardo said the group contacted the Northern Arizona University Police Department, which prosecuted the offender. Court records indicate that the table swiper was charged with theft and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.
Lombardo was complimentary of the police department and university administration for the handling of the various incidents.
She also remains undeterred, despite the hostility.
"To me, Turning Point means truth, and fighting for what you believe in," Lombardo said. "Because if we lose all hope, and we just give up on everything, then there's no way that we'd be able to have a future in America."
She described the militance of those who oppose Turning Point as motivational, and said that she prays for her opponents because she feels badly for them.
"I hope they find their way out of the hatred that they let run their lives," she said. "Because at the end of the day, even though I disagree with those people, and they may disagree with me, I believe they are just extremely misguided, and they have just been lied to."
She encouraged others to step up and fight for what they believe.
"To those people who are not quite sure if they want to step into the movement yet, to those people, I would say if you can't do it, if you won't do it, then who else will?"
Since Kirk's death, political leftists have opposed Turning Point with full force, as interest in the conservative organization has skyrocketed. Other right-leaning groups have also faced a barrage of hatred.
In one such incident, a teaching assistant at Illinois State University was caught on camera flipping a TPUSA table. He had been arrested only days prior for a similar act. He was later arrested by the FBI for allegedly making online threats against President Donald Trump.
Another repeat offender was accused of flipping a TPUSA table at the University of Iowa, after doing the same to a Young America's Foundation display prior.
Northern Arizona University declined to comment further.
Stabbing spree, chemical attack at Japan factory injures 15
Fifteen people were injured, and a suspect is in custody following a stabbing spree and chemical attack at a tire factory in central Japan.
The 38-year-old attacker allegedly stabbed eight people and wounded seven others with what was believed to be bleach on Friday at a Yokohama Rubber Co. facility in Mishima, west of Tokyo, officials said.
The motive for the incident is unclear, but the suspect is believed to be a former employee at the factory, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing investigative sources.
The suspect was carrying a survival knife and wearing what appeared to be a gas mask, Japanese newspaper Asahi added.

The Fujisan Nanto Fire Department told The Associated Press that five of the people who were stabbed were in serious condition.
Images and video taken at the scene showed first responders swarming the factory.
Shizuoka prefecture police said the attacker was arrested for alleged attempted murder.
Media reports described the stabbing victims as all being conscious while being transported to local hospitals.
The seven others injured by the bleach thrown at them during the attack were hospitalized as well, the fire department said.

Raiders star Maxx Crosby leaves team facility after getting ruled out in game for No 1 pick
The Las Vegas Raiders will be without their two best players in a game that will determine who gets the rights to the No. 1 overall pick next April.
The New York Giants will head west Sunday in a battle between two 2 and 13 teams — Big Blue currently owns the No. 1 pick but would forfeit it to the Raiders with a victory.
Raiders tight end Brock Bowers was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, ending his season. A few days later, defensive end Maxx Crosby was listed as out because of a nagging knee injury.

Crosby, who said earlier this week he did not "give a s---" about the No. 1 pick, then left the team facility because he disagreed with his status for the remainder of the year, according to Fox Sports NFL reporter Jay Glazer.
Glazer said the Raiders wanted to shut the star defensive end down for the team’s final two games of the regular season, but Crosby "vehemently disagreed" with the idea and left the facility. Crosby, a Pro Bowler in each of the past five seasons, has played in each of the Raiders’ 15 games this season and has recorded 10.0 sacks.
"I don’t play for that. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world," Crosby told reporters Tuesday.
"That’s what I focus on every day, and being a great leader, and being an influence, and being that guy on a consistent basis for my team. The front office, the coaches, they do that. But that’s got nothing to do with me. I’ve learned that lesson in the past, you can’t control everything. That’s not my job description, my job is to be the best in the world at what I do."
The No. 1 overall pick would give the Raiders a chance to select the top quarterback in the class, as Geno Smith doesn’t appear to be the long-term answer.
The Giants seem to have found their franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart, which would likely prompt a trade back if they hold the pick.
The Giants and Raiders play at 4:05 p.m. ET on Sunday.

USC legends react to storied Notre Dame rivalry going on indefinite hiatus
The 2026 college football schedule looks a little bit different than in years past.
For the first time since the rivalry began in 1926, except for hiatuses due to World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic, USC and Notre Dame will not play each other next year, or potentially any time soon.
There have been 96 total meetings between the two schools, which have managed to schedule a game every year despite Notre Dame not being in a conference.

However, USC is said to have wanted to play the game earlier in the season — it has typically been played during either rivalry week in Los Angeles or mid-October in South Bend.
The reaction has been strong, but Matt Leinart defended his school.
"Call me lame but I'm going to trust a school that's produced more Heisman winners than anyone else in history and 11 National Championships to do what's right for the program," Leinart posted on X Christmas Eve. "Texas and A&M played forever and then they didn't. Same with Utah and BYU. It was a bummer but the world didn't end. Here's hoping this is a momentary pause just like those."
Leinart's head coach at the time, Pete Carroll, differed from his former quarterback.
"I have no space to think of why somebody would want to do that," Carroll said Monday. "I hope that doesn’t carry over to other matchups that have been so important to people over the years and so much fun, not so much the teams. It’s for the fans and for the alumni. That’s too bad. I’m disappointed to hear that."
The Fighting Irish announced Monday they filled their last 2026 open date with a game against BYU. Notre Dame and USC officials say they recognize the rivalry's importance and are working to bring it back, but it likely won't be until the new decade.
"USC and Notre Dame recognize how special our rivalry is to our fans, our teams and college football and our institutions will continue working to bring back the Battle for the Jeweled Shillelagh," Notre Dame and USC officials said in a joint statement. "The rivalry between our two schools is one of the best in all of sport and we look forward to meeting in the future."
Notre Dame and USC first played in 1926, and the Irish lead the series between the two traditional powers 53-38-5. The Irish have won each of the last three meetings and won this year in Indiana, 34-24.
Negotiations became more challenging when USC joined the Big Ten last season, because the Trojans prefer to play non-conference games in August or September. The two schools, which have combined to win 22 national championships and produced 15 Heisman Trophy winners, have traditionally met in October or November.

Former Broadway actress stabbed to death in her New Jersey home, police say
Former Broadway performer Imani Dia Smith was stabbed to death over the weekend in New Jersey, and her boyfriend has since been arrested and charged in connection with her murder.
Smith, who starred as Young Nala in the Broadway production of "The Lion King," was found on Dec. 21 with multiple stab wounds. Officials say she was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. She was 26 years old.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Thomas Bryan of the Edison Police Department issued a joint announcement on Dec. 23, saying that a man had been arrested and charged in connection with the homicide. They identified the individual as 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small. While the official statement did not say that Jackson-Small was Smith's boyfriend, it did note that the two "knew each other prior to the incident" and therefore it was "not a random act of violence."
Jackson-Small has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Smith's family set up a GoFundMe page in her honor, which has raised more than $65,000, exceeding the initial goal of $50,000. The funds raised will help the family cover funeral and memorial expenses, crime scene cleanup at Imani’s home, trauma therapy for Imani’s son, siblings and parents, time off from work to grieve, provide care and attend legal proceedings, legal and administrative costs, as well as ongoing support for Imani’s son and care for her beloved dog, Kuro.
Smith is survived by her 3-year-old son, parents, two younger siblings as well as, "an extended family, friends, and community who loved her so very much," the GoFundMe reads.
"Imani had her whole life ahead of her. She was a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person. A true triple-threat performer, she most notably played the role of Young Nala on Broadway in Disney’s Lion King — an experience that reflected the joy, creativity, and light she put into the world," the GoFundMe reads.
'Anaconda' Review: Paul Rudd and Jack Black give 90s jungle thriller a surprisingly fun makeover
We often ask ourselves why on earth some of these movies get made — particularly reboots. When one gets announced, it's frequently met with a collective eyeroll from the internet.
Take, for example, "Anaconda" — the 1997 jungle horror flick starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight. It's about a documentary film crew who find themselves stranded in the Amazon rainforest and fighting for their lives against a giant, mythic-like snake. It was panned by critics and received several Razzie nominations, but it found success at the box office and is now considered a cult classic. But was anyone really clamoring for an "Anaconda" reboot?
Well, the motto at Sony Pictures isn't "Ask and you shall receive." It's more like, "We're doing this, and you'll be pleasantly surprised."
To Sony's credit, they know how to take an old IP that has its core fans but otherwise has collected dust and revive it in a way that feels fresh and that's actually pretty funny. They did it with two "21 Jump Streets" and two "Jumanji" films. And fortunately for the studio, they did it once more with "Anaconda."
Paul Rudd and Jack Black star Griff and Doug, two childhood best friends who always dreamt of making it in showbiz but never exactly made it a reality. Griff's claim to fame as an actor was a four-episode stint on the CBS procedural "S.W.A.T." while Doug grapples with his unfulfilling job as a wedding videographer to provide for his family instead of pursuing a career as a filmmaker. As he says so himself, he has a "B, maybe a B+ life."
That all changes after Griff reveals that he obtained the rights to "Anaconda," which happens to be their all-time favorite movie, and that he wants to reboot it indie style. He convinces Doug, as well as their core besties Claire (Thandiwe Newton) and Kenny (Steve Zahn), both of whom are also unsatisfied with their lives, to relive the fun they had making movies as kids and bring "Anaconda" back on the big screen — though they struggle to figure out if it's a "reimagining" of the original or a "spiritual sequel."
‘AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH’ REVIEW: IT'S TIME TO LEAVE PANDORA
The four of them fly down to Brazil on an extremely tight budget, where they are joined by oddball snake handler Santiago (Selton Mello) and the reserved Ana (Daniela Melchior), the woman who they think is the captain of the riverboat they board but is apparently on the run from illegal gold miners.
They start filming in the jungle and everything seems to be going according to plan – that is until Griff unintentionally kills Santiago's snake by throwing it into the boat's propeller. Griff and Santiago roam the jungle to find a new snake for the movie, only to find a humongous snake that would make King Kong blush.
"We came here to make 'Anaconda.' And now we are in it," Doug eventually realizes in fear.
What makes this "Anaconda" work is how meta it is. Any film junkie, regardless of your fandom (or lack there of) for the 1997 original, will have a good chuckle over Doug and Griff's filmmaking process, particularly as they passionately mull over the "theme" of their movie.
Director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Enten seem to be finding a knack for the meta movie — their last theatrical release was 2022's "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," another hilarious action flick starring Nicolas Cage (playing himself). And following in the footsteps of "21 Jump Street" and "Jumanji," "Anaconda" works because not only does it not take itself seriously, it's also self-aware, which makes it even funnier.
Rudd and Black have been reliable comedic leads for decades, and they don't disappoint here. Newton, better known for more serious performances ("Crash," "Westworld," "Wednesday" to name a few), does a sufficient job as Claire, a now-divorced attorney and Griff's former flame, but Zahn is the scenestealer as Kenny, the bumbling recovering alcoholic who serves as the cameraman on the four-person cast and crew.

"Anaconda" is not the movie we asked for. Nonetheless, it serves its purpose. While it isn't a must-see, the meta reboot is solid entertainment and the best option for laughs in theaters this holiday season. But if you have ophidiophobia — a fear of snakes — this might not be for you.
"Anaconda" is rated PG-13 for violence/action, strong language, some drug use and suggestive references. Running time: 1 hour, 39 minutes. In theaters Christmas Day.
Most shocking examples of Chinese espionage uncovered by the US this year: 'Just the tip of the iceberg'
This year has had no shortage of alarming Chinese espionage efforts targeting the United States that were uncovered by government officials.
2025 saw the conviction of a former active-duty military member accused of selling Navy secrets to Chinese intelligence, the arrests of Chinese nationals accused of trying to recruit active-duty service members as intelligence assets and smuggle dangerous toxins into the United States, the disruption of a Chinese "Hacker-for-Hire" ecosystem, and more.
"President Trump is not afraid of the Chinese," Gatestone Institute senior Fellow Gordon Chang said on Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria" following a new arms sale to Taiwan. However, Chang lamented that Trump was ambivalent to the "information war" with China, noting that "the Chinese are able to tar him and tell the rest of the world that Trump is afraid of the Chinese … but when you look at the reality, President Trump is going after China across the board," Chang argued.

One of the alarming Chinese espionage headlines to hit the news this year was an effort by several Chinese nationals to smuggle a pathogen described by the government as a "potential agroterrorism weapon" into the United States in 2024. A complaint against the suspects was unsealed by federal officials this year, leading the case to make headlines nationwide.
One of those individuals complicit in the case, Yunqing Jian, 33, a citizen of the People’s Republic of China and a researcher employed at the University of Michigan, was allegedly receiving money from the Chinese government for her work on the pathogen the suspects were trying to smuggle. Meanwhile, her boyfriend, who worked at a Chinese university conducting research on that same pathogen, initially lied but then admitted to smuggling it through the Detroit airport so it could be taken to the University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend worked.
Jian eventually pleaded guilty. She was later sentenced to time served and then deported back to China. Her boyfriend was immediately deported to China when he was caught at the Detroit airport trying to bring the toxin into the United States.
Just this month, a separate Chinese researcher from Indiana University was also accused by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of trying to smuggle a dangerous toxin into the country, this time Escherichia coli (E. coli). The FBI identified the smuggling suspect as post-doctoral researcher Youhuang Xiang, who also allegedly made false statements to law enforcement.

Federal officials have disrupted Chinese intelligence efforts to recruit assets in the United States this year as well, according to Justice Department communications.
In July, federal officials disrupted a "Clandestine PRC Ministry of State Security Intelligence Network" that was operating in the United States and was attempting to bribe active-duty soldiers with thousands in cash to work for them as assets.
The following month, in a separate case, a federal jury convicted former Navy sailor, Jinchao Wei, also known as Patrick Wei, who was caught trying to sell military secrets to a Chinese intelligence officer for $12,000.
Hacking was a big part of Chinese espionage efforts in 2025 too.
A major Chinese-linked hacking threat referred to as "Salt Typhoon" was reported this year to have launched an attack compromising at least 200 American companies as part of its broader efforts that have included gaining access to law enforcement wiretapping mechanisms and information on members of Congress, according to the top cyber chief at the FBI. Critical infrastructure manufacturers like AT&T, Verizon, Charter Communications, and others have reportedly been exposed by the group, which was first uncovered publicly in 2024 but whose efforts have dated back several years.
Earlier this year, in March, the Department of Justice also announced that federal officials had disrupted a "Hacker-for-Hire Ecosystem" operating out of China at the direction of Chinese intelligence officers as well. These malicious actors worked for private companies and as contractors in China, which was intended to hack and steal information in a way that would obscure the Chinese government's involvement, the DOJ said.
China's increasing acquisition of farmland in the United States has been of growing concern during 2025 as well, with Chinese-linked entities buying up land near military bases, including a trailer park near Missouri's Whiteman Air Force Base.

After nearly 19 years of marriage, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban ended their relationship in September. The "Big Little Lies" star filed for divorce from her country singer husband on Sept. 30.
While Kidman and Urban's split stunned fans, those close to the country star say it was a long time coming. A source told People magazine that Kidman and Urban's marriage troubles "really [hadn't] been a secret" and that the two had been living separately for a while before news of the split broke.
"People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable," the source claimed.
Kidman and Urban met in 2005 and tied the knot a year later. They welcomed two daughters during their marriage, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.
After months of public speculation, Katy Perry and longtime partner Orlando Bloom announced their split in July.

Phypers first filed for divorce from Richards on July 7. Phypers was arrested in court last month on spousal abuse charges stemming from two separate incidents in 2017 and 2022, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital. He was in court to fight a restraining order request filed by Richards. The reality TV star's permanent restraining order was granted.
Phypers later revealed he's been begging friends for money as he attempts to navigate the financial distress. "My financial situation gets worse by the day," he wrote in court documents obtained by Fox News Digital. "My pickup truck, which is now my only vehicle, is subject to repossession. I am in danger of eviction at any time. I am begging friends for money to have food to eat."

Comedian Amy Schumer and her husband, chef Chris Fischer, announced their split in December.
"Blah blah blah Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years. We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time," she wrote in the caption.

Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli confirmed their separation in October.
"Lori and Mossimo are living apart," Loughlin’s rep, Elizabeth Much, told Fox News Digital. "There are no legal proceedings underway."
The couple met in 1995 and got married in 1997. The estranged couple share two adult children: Bella Rose and Olivia Jade.
The separation comes five years after the couple were ensnared in the college admissions scandal, pleading guilty to wire and mail fraud related to paying hundreds of thousands in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California. Loughlin and Giannulli each served time behind bars for their crimes.
