DANA PERINO: 'Purple State' reveals life's biggest choices are personal, not political
If you read "Everything Will Be Okay" and felt inspired and reassured, read "Purple State."
Over the years, I’ve been driven to write my mentoring books because I wanted all of my best advice to be in one place. As I set out to draft my new novel, "Purple State," I wanted to help my characters — three women: Dot, Mary and Harper — live out those lessons in the story. They confront and address their quarter-life crises in a way that has the potential to set them up for career success and personal fulfillment.
In my nonfiction books, I talked about living with principles that make decision-making easier. And now in "Purple State," I show what it costs to live by those principles — to have them tested, and to live with the consequences of your decisions.
That’s how I’ve bridged the two books.

"Everything Will Be Okay" made it plain that life isn’t easy. It basically said, yes, there’s uncertainty in life, and you can manage that by being more resilient and trusting yourself — sticking to your values even when the path ahead isn’t clear. Especially then! It was a guidebook for navigating chaos with grace.
And that’s where I began with "Purple State." The story takes place over a single year. Dot, Mary and Harper are each at a quarter-life crossroads. They have great ambition, but they’re being bruised by experience. They’re trying to reconcile what they thought they would be doing at this point in their lives with the lives that they’re actually living.
When given a chance to shake things up, Dot leaves behind the certainty of New York for a relationship and a career change she can’t fully control. Mary, grounded and pragmatic, must confront the limits of playing it safe. Harper, sharp but lacking confidence, discovers that independence without vulnerability can become its own kind of isolation.
Does that sound like you — or someone you know and love? That’s because I didn’t pull their problems out of thin air. These are the challenges I see young people dealing with all the time. And because I dealt with them myself. If there’s one thing you learn from both books, it’s that you aren’t alone in feeling this way. That you can find a way to navigate the daily back-and-forth between fear and faith, control and surrender, and ambition and connection.
Another truism of both books is that character matters more than circumstance. Who are you when no one is looking? "Purple State" takes that idea and tests it as the three friends figure out how to live for a year away from Manhattan while they’re in Wisconsin.
They’re deeply involved in a political campaign, and they all end up testing the limits of what is too confining, too comfortable and too far outside their plans. Along the way, they learn that love requires risk — just like their careers. And perhaps the safe choice isn’t the right one.

Titanic survivor's life jacket sells for over $900K at auction, far exceeding price expectations
A life jacket worn by a Titanic survivor sold for more than $900,000 at auction Saturday, far exceeding expectations and highlighting the enduring fascination with the doomed ship.
The flotation device — believed to be one of only a handful of Titanic life jackets still in existence — was used by first-class passenger Laura Mabel Francatelli during the ship’s 1912 sinking and was the only one of its kind ever offered at auction.
It sold for 670,000 pounds, or roughly $906,000, including fees, at Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, England, to an unidentified telephone bidder.
The final price far surpassed its estimated range of about $339,000 to $475,000.

Other items sold at the auction included a seat cushion from a Titanic lifeboat, which fetched about $527,000 and was purchased by the owners of Titanic museums in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri.
"These record-breaking prices illustrate the continuing interest in the Titanic story, and the respect for the passengers and crew whose stories are immortalized by these items of memorabilia," auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said.
Francatelli wore the life jacket as she boarded Lifeboat No. 1 with 11 others after the Titanic — described at the time as "practically unsinkable" — struck an iceberg just before midnight on April 14, 1912, off Newfoundland during its maiden voyage from England to New York.

She and seven other survivors from the same lifeboat later signed the item.
Francatelli, then 22, had boarded the Titanic in France while working as a secretary to fashion designer Lady Lucy Duff Gordon and her husband, Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon.
She later recalled being helped into a life preserver and directed to the deck as lifeboats were lowered. Lifeboat No. 1, which had a capacity of 40, became controversial for failing to return to pick up additional survivors from the freezing Atlantic waters.

The cream-colored life jacket, made of canvas with cork-filled sections, has been displayed at museums in the United States and Europe.
While the item fetched a high price, it fell short of the record for Titanic memorabilia. In 2024, a gold pocket watch given to the captain of the RMS Carpathia — the ship that rescued more than 700 survivors — sold for 1.56 million pounds, or nearly $2 million at the time.
Saturday’s auction took place 114 years after the Carpathia arrived in New York with Titanic survivors on April 18, 1912.

Bron Breakker crushes Seth Rollins with two spears in epic return at WrestleMania 42
Seth Rollins was supposed to be going up against Gunther at WrestleMania 42 on Saturday night but he wasn’t expecting a freight train to run through him.
Rollins appeared to be in the driver’s seat toward the end of the match. He hit Gunther with a pedigree on the announce table and followed up with a storm. All he had to do was get Gunther back in the ring and finish the job. As the referee tended to Gunther, a wild Bron Breakker appeared.

Breakker ran down the side of the entrance ramp at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas at full speed and tore through Rollins with a gnarly spear. He rolled Rollins back in the ring, spat on him and waited for Gunther to finish the job.
Gunther put Rollins in a sleeper hold, forcing "The Revolutionary" to tap out.

Gunther walked to the back as the winner. Breakker was hung around to pick apart the scraps.
Breakker sprinted back down the ramp and hit Rollins with another crushing spear, stunning the crowd.
Breakker has been out of action for a few weeks with an injury, likely costing him a match of some kind at WrestleMania 42. Nevertheless, he still had bad blood with Rollins as their rivalry turned up a notch.
This will not be the last of Breakker and Rollins. On the flip side, Paul Heyman will now owe Gunther a favor. It’ll will be interesting to see how the favor gets cashed in.
Cody Rhodes retains Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42, but Randy Orton gets last licks
Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton put on a pure wrestling match at WrestleMania 42 on Saturday night in Las Vegas and the looming distraction was eliminated for the most part.
Pat McAfee entered the ring with Orton to begin the match. The presence of the ESPN commentator was clearly a sore spot for fans as he received some of the loudest boos of the night at Allegiant Stadium. He attacked Rhodes with a microphone to start the match.

Once Rhodes got his bearings, he pushed Orton to the side and turned his attention to McAfee. He cleared off the announce table, placed McAfee on it. He allowed Jelly Roll to hit an elbow drop onto the former NFL player. McAfee was booed as he was carried out of the arena on a stretcher.
The match finally began. It moved a slow, but calculated pace for the most part. Rhodes, who normally doesn’t target his ailing opponents, kept working Orton’s back for the entire match. The crowd watched silently as Rhodes and Orton traded blows and tried to gain advantage on one another.
It wasn’t until Rhodes pushed Orton into the ring post outside of the squared circle where the crowd finally woke up. Orton was busted open. Rhodes tried to steal Orton’s finisher and give him an RKO but it was countered. Orton then stole Rhodes’ tactic and hit "The American Nightmare" with a Cross Rhodes.
Moments later, Rhodes finally hit Orton with an RKO. But still, no fall. Orton responded with an RKO of his own. He could smell his 15th WWE championship, but Rhodes kicked out.

Orton got Rhodes again and hit him again with an RKO. The match wore on and Charles Robinson was eventually hit with an RKO. There was no referee. Orton tried to kick Rhodes in the groin reminiscent of what McAfee did to him on SmackDown a few weeks ago.
Rhodes countered and kicked Orton in the groin instead. Rhodes went to the top rope when Orton came out of nowhere with the RKO once more. There was no referee to count, until McAfee made a miraculous recovery.
McAfee sprinted down to the ring and counted for Orton, but Rhodes kicked out at two.
McAfee tried to yell at Orton to continue his attack, but Orton nailed McAfee with an RKO. Rhodes took advantage of Orton taking his eye off the ball for a split-second. Rhodes hit the Cross Rhodes and pinned Orton for the win to retain the championship.
The exhausted and bloody competitors caught their breath in the ring, but Orton was far from finished. He grabbed the belt from Rhodes and hit him with it.
Orton ended the night with a punt kick to Rhodes’ head, ending Night 1.
Nicole Kidman recalls being alone in Venice the night she learned her mother had died
Nicole Kidman is opening up about the day she found out her mother had died.
The 58-year-old actress spoke at the live speaker series, HISTORYTalks 2026, which is organized by the History Channel, on Saturday about a number of things, including learning of her mother's death just prior to accepting the best actress award for "Babygirl" at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024.
"I’d won best actress at Venice Film Festival. This seems to be such a common theme through my life," she said, per The Hollywood Reporter. "I was about to go on stage, and I found out my mother had died. I went right back to the room in Venice, got into bed and was completely devastated."
She recalled feeling as if she didn't know how she would be able to continue on without her mom, saying, she "was so much a part of my existence. The idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing."

The "Big Little Lies" star went on to say that "the idea of being there at that particular moment was harrowing," and she began to take steps to leave Venice as soon as possible.
"I remember getting into a boat in the canal, and literally at night trying to find my way to the airport, and then turning around and going, I can’t even do this," she said. "And then went back into the bed, and I was alone. My husband wasn’t there. My children weren’t there. I’d gone to win an award. What should have been a beautiful thing, ended up with that. But there is the contrast of life."
Having gone through this tragic experience alone, Kidman says she now tells people "that’s when I know I’m resilient," and "can survive pretty much anything."
Kidman's mother, Janelle, died in September 2024 at the age of 84.

Two years after her mother's death, the Academy Award-winning actress shared with investigative journalist, Vicky Nguyen, as part of the private school's Silk Speaker Series, that she has plans to become a death doula.
"As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman said per the San Francisco Chronicle. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn’t in the world anymore, and that’s when I went, ‘I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care.’"

Kidman shares two daughters — Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15 — with her ex-husband, Keith Urban, while her sister, Antonia, has six kids.
The actress has spoken about her close bond with her mother many times over the years, telling the Sydney Morning Herald about how her mom always pushed her to pursue her dreams, saying, "she carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths."
"Mom didn’t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal," Kidman added. "That’s given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad."

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck took to X on Thursday to share the heartbreaking story of Liv Perrotto, who passed away before she could fulfill her biggest dream of meeting Musk.
According to Beck, Perrotto had the opportunity to speak with the Tesla CEO just days before her death, but she was too exhausted and asked him to call back later.
Although she died before their encounter, she left behind a handwritten list of eight questions on her nightstand, which her mother, Rebecca, shared with Beck in hopes that Musk would finally answer them.

Paige makes triumphant WWE return at WrestleMania 42, captures tag titles with Brie Bella
WrestleMania can still provide some unexpected moments, and it showed Saturday night.
Ahead of the start of the fatal four-way match for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, Nikki Bella came out with Brie Bella and announced she could no longer participate in the match because of an ankle injury.
She said, however, she called a friend for backup.

Paige’s music hit and the crowd at WrestleMania 42 went absolutely berserk. Paige would team up with Brie Bella for the match against champions Nia Jax and Lash Legend, Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair and Bayley and Lyra Valkyria.
Bella started the match for her team. The crowd was eager for Bella to tag in Paige, and when she did, the crowd went wild. Paige took care Jax before Bliss went on the attack.
Flair tried to help Bliss, but was hit with Nikki Bella’s crutch. Bliss had Paige in position for a top-rope move but took her eye off Paige enough for her to recover. Paige countered Bliss and hit the RamPaige. She pinned Bliss for the win.

Paige and Brie Bella became the new tag team champions.
Paige started at Florida Championship Wrestling in 2011 before moving up to the NXT brand. She made her WWE debut in 2014 when she challenged AJ Lee for the Divas Championship. Paige won the match and became the youngest Divas champion at age 21.
She would help usher in a new generation of women’s wrestlers in 2015 as part of the women’s revolution. But neck injuries sidelined her for two years.
It’s been eight years since Paige wrestled in a WWE ring and in 2026, she’s a champion.

Liv Morgan and Stephanie Vaquer beat each other up for weeks on end. Morgan was on the receiving end of a head bump in one backstage segment thanks to Vaquer.
Sometimes, revenge on "The Grandest Stage of Them All" is the sweetest thing that could happen.

Morgan defeated Vaquer with the help of Roxanne Perez and Raquel Rodriguez to become a three-time holder of the Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania 42. Perez and Rodriguez provided the outside interference Morgan needed to take advantage of Vaquer.
As Morgan, Perez and Rodriguez were outside of the ring, Vaquer hit a springboard crossbody. But she was only able to take out Perez and Rodriguez. Morgan went on the attack from there.

Morgan got back in the ring and set up Vaquer for Oblivion. She hit it clean for the second time and pinned Vaquer for the win.
Morgan last won the World Women’s Championship at the King and Queen of the Ring in May 2024. She held it until Jan. 6, 2025, losing it to Rhea Ripley on the Netflix debut. A subsequent injury forced Morgan out of action, but she made her return at Survivor Series: WarGames.
Since then, she’s been on a roll and after winning the women’s Royal Rumble match, Morgan is now a champion again.
Giants trade star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to Bengals in draft week blockbuster
The New York Giants are trading star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for a package that includes the 10th pick in this year's NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.
Lawrence, 28, was seeking a new contract, but is also coming off his first season of missing the Pro Bowl since 2021.
Reports emerged that Lawrence wanted to be traded from New York in recent weeks as new head coach John Harbaugh looks to reshape the team.

The burly 340-pound defensive lineman is a three-time Pro Bowler and has been with the Giants through some rough seasons. Despite that, he’s been one of their better defensive players since the team selected him in the first round of the 2019 draft out of Clemson.
Lawrence has 30½ sacks, 15 pass breakups and 341 tackles in 109 career games with New York.
Last season, Lawrence played in all 17 games for the first time in his career. He had an interception to go along with 31 tackles and a half-sack.
The 28-year-old player signed a four-year contract extension with the Giants in 2023, reportedly worth $87.5 million. He has two years left on his current deal. He would be paid $18.5 million in 2026 and $15.5 million if a new deal isn’t negotiated.
Now, the Giants enter the first NFL Draft of Harbaugh's tenure with the No. 5 and No. 10 overall picks, and Harbaugh has authority over the team's draft decisions.

Obama, Mamdani sing ‘Wheels on the Bus’ with Bronx kids during first joint appearance: video
Former President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met for the first time Saturday to read and sing with children at a Bronx childcare center, and to discuss the mayor's vision for the city.
Video showed the two leaders laughing, reading children's books and performing their rendition of "Wheels on the Bus" at the Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx.
The pair also met with families and discussed Mamdani’s vision for the city, according to the mayor's office, stressing the importance of "giving New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible."

While Obama had not met Mamdani in person prior to Saturday's visit, the former president called the self-proclaimed socialist shortly before his election and offered to be his sounding board, according to The Associated Press.
Mamdani marked his 100th day in office less than a week ago, vowing to create five government-run grocery stores by the end of his first term on Jan. 1, 2030, falling in line with promises made during his campaign.

Recent polls showed 48% of his constituents approve of Mamdani's job so far, while 30% disapprove and 23% are unsure, FOX 5 New York reported.
