Kelly Ripa admits everyday habit led to painful gum surgery
Kelly Ripa’s diligent dental hygiene came back to bite her.
The longtime talk show host revealed her "good-bad habit" of brushing her teeth too much caused severe gum recession, eventually forcing her to undergo surgery that temporarily left the famously chatty TV personality unable to speak.
"I’m an over-brusher," Ripa revealed during an episode of her podcast, "Let's Talk Off Camera," that was recorded before her surgery.

"I brush my teeth too much," she explained to her guest, "Survival of the Thickest" creator Michelle Buteau. "It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums."
Buteau complimented Ripa for prioritizing her health, but the talk show host quickly admitted the procedure was long overdue.
"Before you praise me, I was supposed to do it five years ago," Ripa said. "But now, just so you know, the doctor was like, ‘Now, you don’t have the luxury of time.’"

Ripa's surgery led her to miss a handful of live tapings of the morning talk show she hosts with husband Mark Consuelos.
At the time, Consuelos revealed Ripa's lengthy recovery process included not talking while chatting with musician Nick Jonas on "Live with Kelly and Mark."
"Wow. That’s got to be the hardest thing she’s ever done," Jonas joked.
Describing Ripa as "such a great conversationalist," Consuelos hinted he might have been having trouble getting the talk show host to follow doctor's orders.
"I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions," he said.

As Ripa recovered at home, Consuelos said the toughest part wasn't the pain – it was convincing the famously curious TV host to stop checking on her healing gums and let the procedure do its work.
"Last night she was like, ‘Can you look?’ I’m like, ‘I’m not pulling your lip down,’" Consuelos said. Ripa instead got into position so Consuelos could check without touching her lip. "So I’m down there like, ‘It looks great!’"
The longtime actor said the surgery was especially alarming because Ripa rarely complains about pain, which made the recovery stand out from any previous trip to the dentist.
"Yeah, it’s painful," he told Jonas. "But she famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad."
Cuban ties put powerful US union under microscope over alleged communist influence push
FIRST ON FOX: The chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions is investigating reports that a union representing roughly 600,000 members is working to advance the interests of the Cuban regime.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., sent a letter to the International Association of Machinists (IAM) on Thursday night demanding information about its possible links to the Cuban government. His letter follows reports that IAM has traveled to Cuba, taken policy positions aligned with the regime, put out public messaging aligned with the regime’s interests and participated in a meeting at a local IAM union hall where a Cuban diplomat addressed union members.
IAM did not respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital.
"I am concerned that IAM Union member dues are financing efforts to change U.S. policy related to the Cuban regime, a State Sponsor of Terror, instead of supporting American workers’ priorities," Cassidy wrote. "These examples raise serious concerns that IAM Union officials have used their positions within the union to advocate for policy objectives promoted by the Cuban regime as part of a foreign influence scheme."
"American workers should not be compelled to finance advocacy that advances the foreign policy aims of a hostile foreign power, particularly one responsible for the deaths of at least three U.S. citizens and one U.S. resident in international waters," the senator added.
Cassidy was referencing a 1996 incident where Cuban MiG fighters destroyed two unarmed civilian aircraft operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue, resulting in the deaths of three American citizens and one permanent resident.
David Ramírez Álvarez, second secretary at the Embassy of Cuba, spoke at a U.S. Hands Off Cuba campaign meeting held at Machinists Hall, a local IAM union hall, Fox News Digital reported in May. Cassidy’s letter says Ramírez Álvarez instructed union members on ways to support Cuba’s policy priorities and oppose U.S. policy toward the island.
Sources told Fox News Digital that Ramírez Álvarez has drawn the attention of American officials for allegedly coordinating an influence network within the United States.
Ramírez Álvarez spoke to union members and leaders on how they could help Cuba by lobbying, following certain pieces of legislation and engaging in national activism.
"The job now is defending Cuba in whatever way we can," an IAM representative told attendees, encouraging them to visit the island if possible, according to previous reporting. He was also involved in an effort that resulted in the California AFL-CIO adopting a resolution calling for Cuba to be removed from the United States’ list of state terror sponsors.
Before Cassidy sent his letter, the State Department released a report in July laying out the ties between organized labor and the communist regime in Cuba. The report alleges that Havana leverages a sizable network of labor union contacts in the United States to push for policies advantageous to its regime, such as lifting embargoes or removing Cuba from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list.
Cassidy said that the Cuban government has used IAM members for "propagandistic purposes." To support this claim, he pointed to a video posted by the Cuban Embassy where an IAM leader said, "We must and will continue to defend the sovereignty of Cuba and Cuban self-determination."
"We must continue to protest, we must continue to make our voices heard in the streets, through social media and beyond," he continued. In a separate video, the same leader gave a welcome message to two Cuban officials on behalf of his union.

Cassidy is hitting the IAM with a bevy of questions, notably whether union employees are working with Cuban officials while on the clock, if the union has ever taken payments from Cuba, if the union has ever made payments to individuals linked to the Cuban regime, if the union had lobbied on Cuba policy and whether the union has any concerns that its members could be wrapped up in Cuban influence operations.
The senator has also requested a full accounting of members and union leadership who have engaged in advocacy related to America’s policy toward Cuba and whether they consulted with Cuban government officials in connection with that activism.
49ers quarterback hospitalized after struggling to breathe in first game in nearly 2 years
Kurtis Rourke's return to the gridiron could not have been much better — until it took a frightening turn late.
The San Francisco 49ers' third-string quarterback got the start for the team's first preseason game on Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans, and the former Ohio and Indiana quarterback did not disappoint.
Rourke, a seventh-round pick in Titans quarterback Cam Ward's draft in March 2025, looked much sharper in his professional debut after missing all of last season recovering from knee surgery, making Thursday his first game since Dec. 20, 2024.

He went 12-for-14 for 101 yards with three rushes for 14 yards on three drives, and his final possession ended in a 1-yard TD run by Patrick Taylor Jr.
However, Rourke left the game after that drive with a rib injury. X-rays were negative, but Rourke had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital.
"They said ribs. He was struggling to breathe, so they took him to the hospital just to check on him and make sure he’s alright. X-rays in here didn’t show it was broken," head coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Shanahan, though, did not seem too concerned that it would be a long-term issue.
"They just wanted to get more imaging and find out, so they weren’t too concerned. I don’t want to downplay it but I don’t want to overplay it either," he said.
Rourke had played his entire final college season with a torn ACL, forcing him to undergo surgery before the draft. He completed a career-high 69.4% of his passes for the Hoosiers, who won the national championship the following season with Fernando Mendoza at the helm.
His 29 touchdowns were also the most of his career, and he only threw five interceptions.
Rourke remained on the roster last year with Brock Purdy and Mac Jones ahead of him. With the coaching he has and the quarterback room he is in, it is no wonder why Rourke impressed in his unofficial NFL debut.

WWII Memorial vandalism suspect now in custody, to be charged with two felonies, Pirro announces
The suspect accused of vandalizing the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C., has been taken into custody, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro announced Friday.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Columbia are charging Melissa L. Farris with two felony charges for her alleged role in the vandalism.
"Vandalizing our World War II Memorial is a despicable attack on a sacred monument honoring the Americans who fought and died for our freedom. Those Americans include my father and grandfather. This morning, we are filing two felony charges, Depredation Against Property of the United States and Destruction of Veterans' Memorials, in Federal District Court against Melissa L. Farris, offenses that carry penalties of up to ten years in prison. She is now in custody," Pirro added.
The DOJ is accusing Farris of an act of vandalism which occurred Thursday. Farris allegedly spray-painted the memorial with the words "Clean hands, dirty money," in bright pink paint.

The alleged vandal also dumped bubble soap into the fountain at the center of the memorial.
President Donald Trump reacted strongly to the memorial's defacement.
"Our beautiful World War II Memorial was just hit by Spray Painting Vandals. THERE CAN BE NO GREATER INSULT TO THOSE AMERICAN HEROES WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR II. First the Reflecting Pool, now this. We are on their trail! Where do these animals come from???" he wrote in a Thursday post on Truth Social.
The memorial is the latest DC monument to endure a bout of sabotage this year.

New Yorkers take Zohran Mamdani free bus promise literally as MTA loses millions in skipped fares
Political promises of "free buses" in New York City are contributing to a spike in fare evasion that is costing the city’s mass transit system millions of dollars, transit officials warn.
In July, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman Janno Lieber blamed political rhetoric for fueling fare evasion, though he never mentioned Mayor Zohran Mamdani by name.
"There’s a trend that broke out," Lieber told reporters following a meeting of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board, according to the New York Post. "With malice towards none, I say all of the talk of free buses, it has an impact."
The MTA reported that paid bus ridership fell nearly 8% in June compared to the same month last year. During Mamdani’s first six months in office, bus fare revenue fell by $31 million compared to the first half of 2025. Agency estimates show nearly half of bus riders now skip the $3 fare.
Mamdani made the slogan "fast and free buses" a major part of his 2025 mayoral campaign. However, the MTA is controlled by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state, rather than City Hall. While the mayor and Hochul unveiled plans on July 8 to focus instead on speeding up bus routes, experts and union leaders say the "free bus" rhetoric has already contributed to fare evasion.
John V. Chiarello, president of Transport Workers Union Local 100, the city’s largest transit union representing more than 40,000 transit workers, told Fox News Digital that current fare evasion levels are the "worst" his drivers have seen.
He noted that buses were temporarily free during the COVID-19 pandemic and said the MTA worked to reverse the resulting habit of not paying fares, but that behavior has resurfaced in recent months.

"Once you make something free, and you give people a feeling of entitlement, and then the mayor says that he wants to make buses free, you have a perfect storm of people not wanting to pay," Chiarello said.
Chiarello noted that union rules strictly instruct bus operators not to confront fare evaders for their own safety following past violent attacks on drivers. He also pushed back on claims that fare-jumpers are strictly low-income New Yorkers.
"I can see myself when I'm sitting in the buses where people with suits are coming on. These are people that have the money. It's just that they're not paying because it's in vogue now," Chiarello added.
Lieber made similar comments, calling on higher earners to pay their fares rather than pass the cost on to other taxpayers.

"For all the people who are on their way to office jobs, who are making a good income, who walk by the bus driver and don’t pay or get on the back and don’t pay, I say it’s time to be New Yorkers," Lieber said, according to The New York Post. "You’re just passing along the cost to another taxpayer. Somebody’s going to have to pay for that ride."
The MTA is also losing fare revenue from riders who do not pay. Nicole Gelinas, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute specializing in urban policy, explained the fiscal impact of the mayor’s proposal.
"The [Independent Budget Office] has estimated free buses would cost the MTA about $1.1 billion a year in fare revenue. And we need that money. The MTA [is] already looking at a $300 million deficit for next year," Gelinas told Fox News Digital. "The idea of giving up a billion dollars plus in fare revenue from the buses, when you have no way to replace that, it's just not fiscally wise."
Gelinas said a herd mentality is also at play, with paying riders watching others board without paying.
"You pay your fare, and then you watch 10 people get on and not pay the fare. So at some point, you're just going to think like, ‘Why am I paying the fare?’" Gelinas said. "So you really want to move back from that tipping point because, right now, if you're paying the fare, you're basically subsidizing the people who are not."
Mamdani has previously defended his fare-free transit push by arguing that widespread non-payment is spurred by an affordability crisis.
Mayor Mamdani's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Shania Twain confronts longstanding narrative that her music promotes man-hating
Shania Twain set the record straight after decades of her biggest hits being embraced as feminist anthems — insisting she was never out to bash men.
Twain's influence has stretched far beyond country music, with some of today's biggest stars crediting her as an inspiration. When Harry Styles brought the Canadian singer onstage at Coachella in 2022, he revealed that her music had been part of his life since childhood. "In the car with my mother as a child, this lady taught me to sing. She also taught me that men are trash," Styles said while introducing Twain.
But Twain doesn't exactly remember delivering that second lesson.
"I didn’t ever say that," Twain recently told The New York Times.

Hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Any Man of Mine" have long been embraced by fans as female empowerment anthems.
But Twain pushed back on that narrative.
"It wasn’t meant to be a feminist message," she told the outlet.
For "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," Twain noted there is "no anger in it" and she didn't write it from the perspective of "a sexist person." In fact, she wasn't even thinking about men when she wrote the 1999 hit.
"I was just owning and celebrating what I think I waited too damn long to celebrate," she said. "People want to celebrate who they are, and what they are, and they don’t want to be criticized for just being themselves. And I think that is a liberty that we all deserve. I certainly waited way too long to give it to myself."

This isn't the first time Twain has pushed back on being labeled a feminist.
"I don’t see myself as a feminist," she told The Times back in June. "I see myself as a very independent thinker and not necessarily because I’m a woman. I am referred to as a feminist. I think I have a lot of feminist points of view because I am so defensive of the vulnerable woman, I really am."
Twain argued that even well-intentioned labels can unnecessarily separate women from men.
"I just feel that I’m strong as a person," she said. "It’s like saying, ‘You look great for your age.’"
In her view, strength and independence shouldn't need a gender qualifier.
"I’m not strong for a woman," Twain explained. "I’m not independent for a woman. I’m not self-sufficient for a woman. I just am a woman. And this falls on boys too."
"It’s, like, ‘Oh, the boy needs less protection than the girl because he’s a boy,'" she added. "That is so not true and it’s not fair. Vulnerable men need just as much protection as vulnerable women."

Twain elaborated on her stance, clarifying that her discomfort was with the feminist label itself — shaped by the negativity and confusion she associated with it growing up — rather than its underlying values.
"It’s a tricky word for me, as growing up for so many years the word had so much negativity and confusion around it that I didn’t personally proclaim myself as a feminist, even though when I look at the values and morals of what a feminist is, of course I align with them," she later wrote to The Times.
Before becoming one of country music's biggest stars, Twain said she spent years feeling uncomfortable in her own skin.
"I’ve been very shy about my body from a very young age … to the point where I would not go to the beach in a bathing suit," Twain told "Extra" in 2023. "I would say probably really tortured by it from the age of 10."

The country music star recalled filming the music video for "You're Still the One." She released the ballad in 1998 and noted that the music video allowed her to step outside her daily life at the time.
"I was 30 when I had my first radio hit. … In that video, I’m braless, I’m allowing the platform of stepping out of my daily self into this world of video-making and making decisions that give me this freedom to, like, do things I wouldn’t normally do in my daily life," Twain told the outlet.
Now, Twain said she has found freedom in embracing the femininity she once hid.
"I started taking ownership," she told The New York Times, explaining that the music videos she created at the beginning of her career "freed" her. The country-pop star began to embrace her femininity "without feeling shame or feeling like I have to hide it for the sake of my talent."
She explained, "The songs just [became] more and more about that liberation, and about making statements with a smile. Because I wasn’t angry at anyone. I was just, like, ‘Wow, it’s time to celebrate being a woman. This is really, actually great.’"

The Minnesota Vikings ended up with a winning record, despite having a mixture of players at quarterback. The team will still have some quarterback issues or controversy this season, but we will get to that in a moment. Last year, more than anything, showed people that JJ McCarthy is probably not ready to be a quarterback. The team did win five straight to close the year, and McCarthy was under center for four of those games. However, his passing high for the season was 250 yards. Ultimately, they missed the playoffs, wasting a really good defensive team.

The major move for the Vikings this offseason was adding Kyler Murray to the roster. He will be the starting quarterback (supposedly). The good news is that if Murray doesn’t work out, or they want to turn to McCarthy, the cost will be really low. Murray is on a veteran minimum contract, and he gets an elite receiver to throw to. He also has a coach who seemingly rejuvenated Sam Darnold’s career. They did have to get rid of a few of their defensive players, so it is very possible their defense takes a step back.

Murray, Aaron Jones, and Justin Jefferson give some fairly unique options for the Vikings. Murray still can scramble, and if head coach Kevin O’Connell can unlock the flashes of potential he’s shown, the Vikings could be a good offensive club. Jordan Addison is a good second receiver, and Jauan Jennings as a third option provides more than enough weapons. That doesn’t mention TJ Hockenson, who can be a solid tight end for the team. The Vikings have a top-10 offensive line as well, so there should be time for Murray to get the ball to the receivers. On defense, the team will probably take a bit of a step back. However, the team is still ranked eighth in the league after the draft, according to Bleacher Report. Brian Flores is a very good defensive coordinator, so I really don’t see it being a major drop-off.

I think the Vikings will win 10 or more games this season. At +160 for over 9.5, I’ll take the move. This is mostly a bet on some things, like O’Connell getting Murray to be a good quarterback. It also is a bet that Flores makes his defense work even with the changes. Injuries can derail anything, but a team that won nine games last year with no quarterback should be better with Murray or even a second year of McCarthy under center.

Rising golf star dead at 18 after brain hemorrhage while playing tournament in Thailand
A pro golfer died at 18 this week after suffering a brain hemorrhage during a tournament.
While playing in the KLPGA Tour’s International Qualifying Tournament in Thailand on Aug. 1, Jessica Bang collapsed and underwent emergency brain surgery at Synphaet Ramintra Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.
Her family announced in a GoFundMe, however, that she died on Aug. 13 at 7:20 am local time in the hospital.

"We are truly heartbroken by this news. However, we would like to continue to remember Jessica and celebrate her achievements, passion, and dedication to golf," the GoFundMe, run by her cousins, said.
"As her cousins, we will forever cherish the time and memories we shared with Jessica. Her sense of humour, together with her cheerful and vibrant personality, will always be remembered and treasured by our family."
The GoFundMe said the funds will be used for her medical expenses.

Wings vs. Fever betting preview pits Paige Bueckers against Caitlin Clark amid WNBA distractions
The WNBA is taking center stage today for the betting market. If you’ve been following the sport, there have been some great stories. If you aren’t following the sport, you’re probably hearing about all the negativity. We had one player post about White privilege, we had another talk about transgender athletes, and both take away from the product on the court. I’ll try and bring us back by betting on it and getting some money from the Wings vs. Fever game.
The Dallas Wings were the team I expected to make a marked improvement this season, and so far, they are. Before the year started, I took the over for their wins, and with just three more wins, they will hit that over. Seeing as how they have another 10 games, I think we have a good shot at it, and I can likely always hedge. Especially considering they have seven home games remaining, so they should be the favorite in most of those.
The bad news here is that the Wings are playing some of their worst basketball of the season. They are just 1-5 over their past six games, and 3-6 over their past nine. A lot of this is likely because of injuries to key players. Azzi Fudd has been out, Alysha Clark and Jessica Shepard as well. Considering Shepard is their leading rebounder, that is quite an impact to lose. Most of them should be back either for this game or sooner. Even without them, Paige Bueckers is still the focal point of this team. Arike Ogunbowale is the other primary scorer for the squad, and she has put together a good campaign.
The Indiana Fever are a team that will continue to get all the attention. Not only will they get the attention because they have the most popular player on the planet on the team, but as a result of that, teams tend to give their full effort against Indiana. That should make the Fever better, but it can also be draining having to take on everyone’s best effort every night. There is more than enough talent on the team for the Fever to compete with any other team in the league.

The attention, for the most part lately, has been off of Clark and onto Cunningham, who made the comment about transgender athletes. Then, later, she was flagrantly fouled by Dijionai Carrington, who then sent out a Threads message about White privilege. Then, their coach, Stephanie White, somewhat defended Carrington’s play (which I think is fine to do). It has just been a mess, and honestly the WNBA should be a public relations case study on what not to do. It is like none of them have any media training.

All of this masks the fact that the Fever are playing solid basketball at the moment. They are a playoff team, and coming together at the right time. Distractions away from the court can leak into the locker room and be a problem. The Wings don’t have those, and are also getting healthy at the moment. Dallas getting their players back can position themselves to make a nice run and gain momentum before the postseason.
Most will look at this as a battle between Clark and Bueckers. Clark is great. I felt like I needed to put a full stop there. She can shoot, she is fan-friendly, a really good passer, all of that. However, she does turn the ball over far too much. It has to be cleaned up. She complains a lot. Bueckers is the better overall player. There is nothing she can’t do on the court. If you traded these two straight up, I don’t think the Wings are worse, but I do think the Fever get better. That doesn’t mean that Dallas will win this game; I think they lose this one. Indiana is playing well at home and has more continuity and momentum at the moment. In addition, I think Dallas just has too many people out. It will likely be a close battle, but give me the Fever to cover the short spread.
