'60 Minutes' meltdown: Scott Pelley fired, praised, scolded for attacking Bari Weiss, charges bias
Scott Pelley went down swinging.
For that, he is being widely praised as a journalistic hero by the media-industrial complex.
And also widely mocked as a self-promoting phony.
Let’s face it, the onetime CBS anchor wanted to be fired – and made sure it happened.
He gave Bari Weiss and the program’s new boss, tech journalist Nick Bilton, not the slightest opening for trying to work together to see how it goes.
Once you accuse Weiss, the editor-in-chief, of "murdering" the show you’ve been on for more than two decades, you are in full bridge-burning mode.
Once you confront your new boss, Bilton, by calling him minimally qualified – and Weiss not at all – you are handing them the rope.
SCOTT PELLEY FIRED AT CBS NEWS AFTER BLOWUPS WITH BARI WEISS, NEW '60 MINUTES' PRODUCER
Weiss, in damage-control mode, told the staff "there must be trust and mutual respect…That foundation was broken on Monday, and despite our attempts to engage with Scott Pelley and to find a way back, unfortunately we weren’t able to do so, and so we had to part ways.
"We did not want that to happen, but that’s the path that he chose. That unfortunate outcome does not discount from the amazing contributions and work that Scott Pelley has done for CBS and for ‘60 Minutes’ over the course of his career."
The British-born Bilton got his revenge in a blistering letter to Pelley:
"You hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt." He called this a "performative display of hostility enacted in front of the staff."
Pelley, for his part, says the new management has already handled some of his stories unethically.
At least one person was pleased. "Look, Scott Pelley’s a stiff," President Trump told the New York Post. "And he’s afraid. And he’s part of this gang of stupid, crooked people that don’t care about our country."
Let’s pull back the camera. Weiss has fired correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vegas and executive producer Tanya Simon. Anderson Cooper quit to return full time to CNN. (And the "CBS Evening News" has been a ratings disaster under anchor Tony Dokoupil.)
The left caricatures Weiss as a crazy conservative, though that’s not true (she’s more of a moderate liberal with some right-leaning views). But she and Bilton, who have worked together in the past, both have no TV experience.
If you examine it from an if-it-ain’t-broke perspective, "60 Minutes," across Manhattan’s 10th Avenue from the main building, produces $200 million in advertising revenue for the network. Its ratings are up 9 percent from last year. After 58 seasons, dating back to Mike Wallace and Morley Safer, it is averaging 9.1 million weekly viewers, an impressive figure in today’s fractured environment. And there’s been significant growth on the digital side.
So for an average viewer who doesn’t follow all the inside baseball, a lot of familiar faces are disappearing from the most successful news franchise in television history. It’s the show’s worst crisis since 1995, when CBS killed Wallace’s story on a tobacco whistleblower’s disclosures because it feared a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit.
In a lengthy statement after his exit, Pelley said "good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience…
"For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified," though he has managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them."
And there was this: "In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all."
Pelley told the New York Times on Tuesday: "I have been in combat in
Afghanistan. I have been in combat in Iraq. I have been in the war zone in Ukraine multiple times, risking my life and the happiness of my family because of my devotion to the broadcast."
Yet that brought him some ridicule because he was not actually "in combat," nor was that his job.
Pelley, 68, was raised in Lubbock, Texas, and worked in local television before joining CBS in 1989. He considered another Texan, Dan Rather, a mentor, but lacked the same cowboy swagger. Pelley’s demeanor has always been sober and serious.
He made his way up the ladder with such jobs as chief White House correspondent, and has won 51 Emmy Awards.
The political overlay is hard to miss. The new owners of CBS, Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and his son David, are billionaire friends of Trump. In fact, they threw a private dinner to honor Trump in April, attended by Bari Weiss as well as Norah O’Donnell and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Their company obtained the administration’s approval to buy Warner Bros. Discovery in a blockbuster deal.
Some at CBS believed the dinner projected an image of excessive coziness with the White House. But the Ellisons didn’t spend that kind of money without planning to make changes.
Reaction to this mess has been, well, pretty intense on both sides, as reported by Mediaite:
MSNOW host Rachel Maddow said "I made a crack there talking about the Scott Pelley news as being sort of Hungarian, oligarchic-style takeover of the media."
Tim Miller, a onetime Republican spokesman who is fiercely anti-Trump, siad "60 doesnt have another Pelley in the pipeline talent-wise."
Liberal commentator Harry Sisson said Pelley was battling "right wing grifters."
Tommy Vietor, an Obama White House official, cracked: "Pelley seems to be attempting a murder/suicide. So far he’s halfway there."

On the conservative side, Outkick founder Clay Travis said: "Scott Pelley has been fired by ‘60 Minutes.’ Pelley will soon find out that no one else in media will come close to paying him millions a year to do a few stories a year. I think a lot of these old school TV guys are delusional about their market worth in today’s media."
Newsmax host Rob Schmitt was dismissive: "Scott Pelley was a mid talent with an ego the size of Jupiter. Adios."
Steve Krakauer, Megyn Kelly’s producer:"With Stephen Colbert and Scott Pelley now out the door at CBS, we're seeing the systematic elimination of smug, old, straight, white guys who think they're better than you."
So Pelley departs in a swirling cloud of controversy – but I’m sure he won’t have trouble finding another job.

A buffalo with a distinctive hairstyle is going viral for its resemblance to President Donald Trump.
The rare albino buffalo, nicknamed "Donald Trump," has become a sensation at Bangladesh’s national zoo thanks to its blond tuft of hair, which many say resembles the president’s signature look.
The animal first gained attention after a local farmer noticed the resemblance.
A video of the pale, horned buffalo quickly spread across social media, drawing crowds to a farm outside Dhaka where it was being kept.

The buffalo was originally sold and slated for slaughter during Eid al-Adha, the Muslim "Feast of Sacrifice," but government officials intervened and ordered the animal transferred to the national zoo in the capital.

Some visitors embraced the comparison.

"There is a resemblance to Donald Trump in its eyes, hairstyle, and skin color," Mohammed Nasim, a student in Dhaka, told The Associated Press.
"And just as Donald Trump has a distinctive personality and lifestyle, this buffalo, after going viral, is now living a similar kind of life, enjoying a lot of attention and special treatment," he added.
According to local media reports, the exhibit initially featured a sign identifying the animal as "Donald Trump," though the sign has since been removed.
The zoo’s curator was later fired, although officials have not publicly disclosed the reason for the dismissal.
As visitors crowded around the enclosure this week, many stopped to take photos and videos of the increasingly famous buffalo.
Others, however, said naming the animal after the president was inappropriate.
"Giving a farm animal the name of one of the world’s most influential leaders was certainly the wrong thing to do," local resident Mohammad Joynal Adedin told the AP.
Still, Adedin made the trip to the zoo to see the buffalo for himself.
"It seems disrespectful," he added. "I think the farmer who did this made a poor decision."
Trump says he will nominate acting AG Todd Blanche to permanently lead Justice Department
President Donald Trump said Wednesday evening that he plans to nominate acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to permanently lead the Department of Justice.
In a video posted to social media by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Trump can be seen announcing that he will nominate Blanche for the position after he assumed the role on an interim basis following former Attorney General Pam Bondi's firing in early April.
"Tomorrow I'm instructing Dan [Scavino] and everybody else that's involved in that very complicated process, which is gonna go, I think, very quickly, that we are going to make him permanent Attorney General," Trump said in the video, which was recorded during a Rose Garden Club Dinner on Wednesday evening at the White House.

Trump's comments came after he signaled during an interview on the Pod Force One podcast, released Wednesday, that Blanche was likely to receive the nomination.
When host Miranda Devine asked whether Blanche would become attorney general, Trump replied: "I think he will."
Trump also said he was not actively considering other candidates and praised Blanche's performance since taking over the role.
"I wanted to see how he's received," Trump said. "You know, we put him as acting, and he's done a very good job, but I've known him a long time."
CNN was first to report Wednesday evening that Trump was expected to move forward with nominating Blanche.
When reached for comment, the White House praised Blanche but stopped short of formally confirming the nomination.
"President Trump has a great relationship with acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and is very pleased with the job he’s doing so far," White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"Todd Blanche is an American patriot who fearlessly fought against the Democrats’ unprecedented lawfare campaign on behalf of President Trump," Jackson added. "The President’s entire team at the Department of Justice is doing a great job advocating for sanity, law and order, and policies that keep Americans safe."
If nominated, Blanche would need to be confirmed by the Senate.
He was confirmed as the Justice Department's second-in-command in 2025 by a party-line vote of 52-46.
Fan disrupts NBA Finals Game 1 while trying to take selfie with Spurs' Victor Wembanyama
The New York Knicks began their pursuit of their first title since 1973 on Wednesday night in a matchup against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs clung to a seven-point lead at halftime, setting up a back-and-forth second half and a tight fourth quarter. But amid the tension of a tightly contested fourth quarter, an overexcited fan briefly stole the spotlight in pursuit of what he hoped would be a once-in-a-lifetime photo.
The unidentified fan ran onto the court midway through the game's final quarter, appearing to try to take a selfie next to Wembanyama.

The fan came from the sideline opposite the team benches, starting from behind the play and running into San Antonio’s offensive end. The person was quickly pulled from the court by two security guards, and it did not appear the person made any contact with Wembanyama or any New York players.
Play was stopped for about a minute before the game resumed with a jump ball. The fan was taken out of the court area through a baseline tunnel.
Earlier in the game, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson limped to the locker room after Spurs forward Harrison Barnes was pushed into his right knee. Brunson returned in the second quarter with his knee heavily wrapped, then appeared to tweak his left ankle later in the game after a Spurs player stepped on him while he contested a shot. He stayed in the game after the second scare.
Brunson finished with 30 points, leading the Knicks in scoring.
The Knicks ultimately secured a 105-95 win over the Spurs in Game 1, marking New York's 12th consecutive playoff victory.

Game 1 lived up to the billing thanks to a dynamite performance from its biggest star, Jalen Brunson.
The San Antonio Spurs couldn't hang with the Knicks in Game 1, as New York took a 1-0 series lead with a clutch 105-95 victory.
The Knicks have now won 12 consecutive postseason games. The Knicks' 12-game postseason winning streak is tied with the 1999 Spurs for second all-time.
Only the 2017 Warriors won more at 15, putting New York within reach.
Most Knicks fans had "winning on the road" on their championship bingo card. Their team did not disappoint.

Brunson rose to the occasion against Victor Wembanyama, helping New York outlast the young and inexperienced Spurs.
Game 1 delivered drama early.
In the first quarter, Brunson exited with an apparent leg injury, frequently grimacing and favoring his right knee.
The scare over Brunson's knee was short-lived.
After a brief trip to the locker room, Brunson quickly returned to the bench and eventually re-entered the game.
The Knicks came out of halftime sluggishly, falling behind by 13 points in the third quarter. But New York never looked rattled.
Brunson, already a postseason hero, took several hard knocks throughout the night, including a minor ankle tweak after colliding with Luke Kornet. Any concerns about his health faded as the game wore on. Brunson turned on the boosters in the second half, attacking the Spurs' defense and showing little sign that his knee was bothering him.
San Antonio relied heavily on the three-point shot, but with little success. The Spurs connected on just 11 of 43 attempts from beyond the arc.
Despite boasting a 7-foot-4 freak in Wembanyama, San Antonio repeatedly fired from deep and came up empty.
Brunson eventually returned to heroic form, leading the Knicks with 30 points and taking over the fourth quarter when it mattered most.
Social media quickly lit up with praise for the Knicks star. "Brunson is the best fourth-quarter performer I've ever seen," one reaction read, echoing the sentiment of fans watching another clutch postseason masterpiece.

The Knicks' supporting cast delivered alongside their star.
"Wasn't really my night most of the night. But we just kept chipping away. Kept finding a way," Brunson said after his MVP-worthy performance.
"Our chemistry, knowing that we have each other's backs," Brunson said when asked about the team's comeback from a 13-point deficit.
"I'll be alright," Brunson added after getting banged up in Game 1.
Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby combined for 35 points. New York's bench backcourt also made key contributions.
José Alvarado played crucial minutes while Brunson was in the locker room being evaluated. Landry Shamet added 13 points off the bench, while Miles McBride scored seven points in 11 minutes.
The Spurs missed more production from De'Aaron Fox, who turned in an unremarkable performance (seven points), leaving San Antonio to lean heavily on its young core.
Wembanyama, one of the marquee stars of this series, was his usual disruptive presence in the paint defensively but struggled to make a larger impact elsewhere. He still led San Antonio with 26 points.
At the end of the day, the lights appeared too bright for the Spurs, and the Knicks head into Game 2 with a 1-0 lead in the Finals.
New York City will have plenty to celebrate after the Knicks opened the Finals with a statement win.

"Trust me, I know all the things to do and I know the things not to do," Beckham said.
Whether he secures a spot on the 53-man roster or goes out on his sword, his final ride in New York will be must-see football.

US military kills two alleged narco-terrorists in latest Eastern Pacific strike on drug-trafficking vessel
The U.S. military carried out a lethal strike Wednesday on a vessel it said was involved in drug trafficking in the Eastern Pacific, killing two men it described as "narco-terrorists," according to U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM).
"On June 3, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations," SOUTHCOM said in a post on X.
"Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations."
The military said two alleged narco-terrorists were killed in the strike. SOUTHCOM did not say whether anyone survived.
No U.S. military personnel were injured, the command added.
SOUTHCOM also released a brief video showing a vessel speeding through the water before erupting in flames.
The latest strike brings the number of people killed in U.S. military operations targeting suspected drug-trafficking vessels to at least 207 since the Trump administration launched a broad campaign aimed at dismantling cartel-linked trafficking networks in September, according to The Associated Press.

Wednesday’s strike followed a series of similar operations in recent weeks.
On Saturday, the U.S. military struck a vessel in the Eastern Pacific, killing three suspected narco-terrorists, according to SOUTHCOM.
A separate strike Friday killed three men, while another operation last Wednesday killed two, the military said.

SOUTHCOM also carried out a strike last Tuesday that reportedly killed one person and left two survivors.
Earlier in May, the command said an operation in the Eastern Pacific killed two alleged narco-terrorists and left one survivor.
The military has released brief videos and statements describing the vessels as tied to designated terrorist organizations, but it has generally not publicly released evidence identifying those killed or proving the vessels were carrying drugs. The campaign has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers, legal experts and human rights groups who question the legal basis for using lethal military force against suspected traffickers outside a traditional battlefield.
The Eastern Pacific and Caribbean remain major corridors for narcotics trafficking, with cartels frequently using small, fast-moving vessels to transport drugs toward the United States and Central America.

SOUTHCOM oversees U.S. military operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean, including counter-narcotics missions aimed at disrupting trafficking networks tied to transnational criminal organizations.
The video released Wednesday was in black and white, similar to most footage previously shared by SOUTHCOM.
Last week, however, the military posted what appeared to be its first color video showing a strike against a suspected drug-trafficking vessel.

Mike Leach nominated for College Football Hall of Fame following eligibility rule change
Mike Leach, the larger-than-life coach credited with popularizing the Air Raid offense and transforming modern college football, has been nominated for the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame class just under four years after his death.
Leach's final coaching stop was at Mississippi State before his death in December 2022.
The National Football Foundation has released the ballot for next year's class, with the class set to be officially unveiled in January. The list features 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 99 players and 39 coaches from lower levels.

Under the previous rules, Leach fell short of the eligibility requirements. However, under the revised criteria, he now qualifies for consideration. The NFF announced last year that the minimum career winning percentage required for coaches would decrease from .600 to .595, beginning with the 2027 class.
LEGENDARY COLLEGE FOOTBALL COACH LOU HOLTZ DEAD AT 89
Leach posted a .596 winning percentage during his head coaching tenures at Texas Tech, Washington State and Mississippi State. He finished his career with a 158-107 record.
Leach coached his teams to wins in 18 games against Top 25 opponents when his team was unranked.
A player is eligible 10 full seasons after his last year in college and must have received first-team All-America honors by a major selector. The nominee’s college football achievements are a prime consideration, but his post-football record as a citizen is also taken into account.
Among other FBS coaches on the ballot are Larry Coker, whose Miami team won the 2001 season's national championship; Dennis Franchione, who made stops at TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M; Ralph Friedgen, who led Maryland to bowls in seven of his 10 seasons; Darryl Rogers, 1977 Big Ten coach of the year at Michigan State; Jackie Sherrill, all-time wins leader at Mississippi State; and Tommy Tuberville, who led powerful Auburn teams of the 2000s.
Heisman Trophy winners Cam Newton of Auburn (2010) and Robert Griffin III of Baylor (2011) are on the ballot along with first-time nominees Tavon Austin of West Virginia, Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin, A.J. Hawk of Ohio State and Barrett Jones of Alabama.

Rubio torches Democrat after bizarre hearing questions about his shoes: 'Is this a circus?'
Secretary of State Marco Rubio called Wednesday's House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing "a circus" after Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., questioned him about a pair of shoes he received as a gift from President Donald Trump.
The exchange came after Jacobs criticized Rubio's testimony regarding the recent conflict with Iran, arguing that he was unwilling to acknowledge facts.
"Mr. Secretary, it seems like you have an issue admitting facts… You couldn’t admit the shoes the president bought you were too big," she said.
Rubio appeared puzzled by the remark.
"I don’t know about the shoes. I mean, [Trump] gave me some Florsheim shoes that are actually pretty good, they fit fine, I don’t know what she’s talking about," he said.
Jacobs then returned to the topic moments later, complimenting Rubio's footwear.
"Your shoes look very nice today, Mr. Secretary," she told him.
"How can you see them? They’re way down here. We’re talking about shoes. Are you guys kidding me? I mean, is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or is this, like, a circus? What is this?" Rubio responded.
RUBIO CRACKS UP AT TRUMP'S REACTION TO NATO LEADER CALLING PRESIDENT 'DADDY'
The exchange came amid a combative hearing in which Democratic lawmakers repeatedly challenged Rubio over the Trump administration's handling of foreign policy, including the recent conflict with Iran.
Earlier in the hearing, Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., questioned Rubio about whether Trump's personal financial interests could have influenced decisions related to military action against Iran.
Rubio forcefully rejected the suggestion.
"Not once. Just to be clear, not a single time, not even for a millisecond, has the president ever discussed his personal economics and relations to war or any public policy that he's made, for that matter," Rubio said. "And I've been in every one of his foreign policy meetings for the most part."

As Democratic lawmakers continued pressing Rubio throughout the hearing on issues ranging from Trump's finances to allegations of corruption within the administration, the secretary grew increasingly frustrated with the tenor of the proceedings.
Later in the hearing, Rubio again complained that lawmakers were not allowing him enough time to answer questions.
"What kind of thing is this? What is this? You know, you get asked questions for five minutes and you don't get time to answer. It's not a hearing," Rubio said.
As the exchange continued, he added, "Is this a dunk tank? What is this?"

New York Knicks owner James Dolan is refusing to let go of his grudge against Charles Oakley, even with the franchise back in the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years.
And apparently not even Michael Jordan could change his mind.
Ahead of Game 1, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed that he and Jordan tried to broker peace between Dolan and the former Knicks enforcer. Neither got anywhere.

Dolan still wouldn't budge.
The bad blood dates back to February 2017 when Oakley attended a Knicks home game and sat a few rows behind Dolan's courtside seat.
Dolan claimed Oakley was verbally abusive. Oakley denied it. Before long, security surrounded the former fan favorite and dragged him out of the arena in handcuffs as stunned fans watched.
The ugly scene quickly became one of the most embarrassing moments of Dolan's tenure as Knicks owner.
Instead of trying to calm things down, Dolan escalated the situation. He later suggested Oakley had an alcohol problem.
Oakley fired back with a defamation lawsuit. The legal fight dragged on for years, but one thing never changed: Dolan kept Oakley banned from The Garden.
Fast-forward to this postseason.
While the Knicks have made a historic run behind Jalen Brunson, Oakley has been supporting the team from road arenas around the country. He's attended games in opposing buildings and cheered on the franchise he helped define during the 1990s.
He's welcome in virtually every NBA arena. Just not at Madison Square Garden.
Dolan owns the building. He can decide who gets through the doors. But after all these years, refusing to bury the hatchet with Oakley says far more about Dolan than it does about the former Knicks star.
Jordan and Silver tried. Dolan said no. Nearly a decade later, the grudge is still going strong.
