Pope Leo hits beaches of popular European migrant entry point after criticizing global immigration policies
Pope Leo XIV landed in Spain's Canary Islands, an epicenter for incoming migrants seeking entry into Europe, on Thursday just days after criticizing the country's immigration policies in a speech to Spain's Parliament.
Pope Leo will meet with 1,000 migrants on Friday to cap off his apostolic journey to Spain, the European country with the sixth largest Christian population on the continent.
Following his parliamentary speech Monday in which he took aim at Europe's immigration polices, Pope Leo landed Thursday on the island chain's Gran Canaria, according to Reuters.
On Thursday he met with migrants and leaders of international organizations that assist migrants, holding a moment of silence for migrants who died trying to reach Gran Canaria at Port of Arguineguin, a dock which made headlines in 2020 after over 1,000 migrants ended up stranded there during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Relief organizations came to call the Port of Arguineguin the "Dock of Shame" after the migrant crisis, a theme Pope Leo seemed to pick up on while speaking at the port Thursday.
"Dear migrants, before saying anything else to you, I want to bow before your dignity," the pope said. "You are not just numbers or files. You are people who have left behind families and homes. You have dreams that no one has the right to despise," Pope Leo said at the dock.
"We cannot grow accustomed to counting the dead," he added.

He also called for "legal and safe pathways" for immigration worldwide.
Located less than 100 miles off the coast of West Africa, Gran Canaria has been the destination for thousands of Africans, many of whom have lost their lives attempting to traverse the volatile waters in small boats.
Over 3,000 people died trying to make the journey in 2025 alone, according to the non-governmental organization (NGO) Caminando Fronteras.
The Canaries have seen a massive uptick in migrant entries since 2015. In 2024 the archipelago broke records with 46,843 irregular migrants compared to under 1,000 in 2015, according to Reuters.
Speaking to media at Pope Leo's event, a boat captain who assists charities and NGOs in ferrying migrants said he had personally helped save over 20,000 migrants in the last 18 years, Reuters reported.
"It's a number that makes me sick and that you cannot forget," the captain, Tito Villarmea, told Reuters. "I wish we didn't have to save anyone," he continued.
Under Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Spain's socialist government has liberalized the country's policies on migration, approving a plan in April to grant 500,000 undocumented migrants legal status.
Spain's conservative lawmakers, meanwhile, fired back after Pope Leo's Monday speech to Parliament.
During his address to lawmakers, Pope Leo called migration a "tragic drama" and said discrimination against people based on "national, ethnic, religious or linguistic origin, or because of their economic or social status" was a violation of the "universal principle of the equal dignity of all human beings."
But Santiago Abascal, who heads Spain's conservative Vox party, countered making a point that Vatican City has policies against illegal immigration as well.
"I like the Vatican state's migration policy. If someone enters illegally or with violence, they are fined, imprisoned and banned from entry. I would like a similar migration policy for Spain," Abascal told reporters Monday.
Grandparents are identity theft's biggest payday
The FBI calls it a "distress scam." It is also known as a grandparent scam. The scam works by making an older adult believe a grandchild is in serious trouble and needs money right away, often before a court date or legal deadline. Victims reported more than $5 million in losses to this type of fraud in 2025. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center also noted that reported losses likely show only part of what scammers actually stole.
The Federal Trade Commission found in August 2025 that some of the fastest-growing scams targeting older adults use fear and urgency to override good judgment. A caller may claim your bank account was hacked and say you need to move your money immediately to protect it. However, the money does not move to safety. It goes straight to the scammer.

AI voice-cloning tools have made these scams even more convincing. Scammers can use a birthday video, voicemail or social media clip to mimic a grandchild's voice. Then they place the call. The voice sounds familiar, the emergency feels real and the request for bail money seems urgent. The FBI counted $352 million in AI-related scam losses among victims 60 and older this past year.
The same three pieces of data are required for identity verification at most banks, brokerages, pension recordkeepers, and Medicare: date of birth, last four digits of a Social Security number, and a current mailing address. For most people in their sixties and seventies, all of those accounts are open.
Those three fields have turned up in breach after breach. The Conduent Business Services breach pulled names, SSNs, dates of birth, and home addresses for more than 25 million Americans from systems that process Medicaid records and employer health plans. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called it the largest data breach in U.S. history in February 2026.
Americans between 65 and 74 held a median net worth of $409,900 in 2022, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, more than ten times the median for adults under 35. The FBI found average losses of approximately $38,500 per victim among Americans 60 and older in 2025, nearly double the figure for younger filers.
Older adults reported $2.4 billion in fraud losses to the Federal Trade Commission in 2024. However, the FTC's December 2025 report to Congress estimated that real losses may have reached $81.5 billion that year. Most cases likely went unreported.
That gap makes identity theft harder to stop. A fraudulent wire from a pension account may never alert a bank. A new credit account opened with stolen information may not reach the victim until it appears on a credit report. By then, weeks may have passed since the application was approved.
Scammers move fast, so it helps to set up account protections before anything goes wrong. These steps can give banks, brokerage firms and family members more ways to spot trouble early.
Brokerage accounts have a protection option many account holders never activate: a trusted contact designation. Under FINRA Rule 4512, brokerage firms must ask for a trusted contact when you open or update an account. A trusted contact can be a family member, attorney or accountant. The firm can contact that person if it suspects financial exploitation or cannot reach you. However, that person cannot trade, withdraw funds or view your account balances. FINRA, the SEC and the North American Securities Administrators Association asked investors in August 2025 to contact their firm and add one. You can name more than one trusted contact. You can also change the designation at any time.
SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION PHISHING SCAM TARGETS RETIREES
Under FINRA Rule 2165, brokerage firms can place a temporary hold on disbursements when they reasonably believe financial exploitation may be happening. That hold can last up to 55 business days. In January 2026, FINRA proposed extending the window to 145 business days. Ask any firm holding a pension, brokerage or annuity account about its policy on disbursements after an address change.
When a caller claims a grandchild is in trouble or a federal agent needs immediate action, hang up. Then call back using a number you already have, not the number in the message. The FTC found that 41% of older adults who reported losing $10,000 or more to impersonation scams in 2024 said a phone call was the initial point of contact. That makes one simple habit especially important: verify the story before you act.
Social Security lets you block electronic and automated telephone access to your account record. Once blocked, no one can change your direct deposit information or mailing address online or through the automated phone system. After that, any changes must go through a live SSA representative at 1-800-772-1213 or a field office visit. FINRA also operates a free Securities Helpline for Seniors at 844-574-3577, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
Even strong account protections may not catch every scam attempt. That is why identity theft monitoring and recovery support can help families respond faster when personal information gets exposed or misused.
Some identity theft protection services monitor dark web marketplaces, data broker sites and people-search sites for exposed Social Security numbers, addresses and other personal information. If fraud happens, recovery support may help contact creditors, file disputes with the three credit bureaus and organize the documentation needed to restore an identity.

Some plans also include identity theft insurance for eligible recovery costs, such as lost wages and legal fees.
No service prevents every misuse of an older adult's identity. However, family monitoring and fraud resolution can shorten the time between when theft happens and when you or someone in your family acts on it.

Grandparents have become a prime target because scammers know where the money is and how to create panic fast. A familiar voice, a stolen Social Security number or a fake emergency can turn one phone call into a devastating loss. The best defense starts before the call comes. Add trusted contacts to financial accounts, block online Social Security changes, verify urgent requests through a number you already know and talk openly with family about scam warning signs. Identity theft protection can also help spot exposed personal information and speed up recovery if fraud happens. No family can stop every scam attempt. However, a simple plan can give older adults more time, more backup and a better chance of keeping their money safe.

New Hampshire Supreme Court overturns Adam Montgomery's murder conviction in daughter Harmony's death
New Hampshire's Supreme Court has overturned the murder conviction of Adam Montgomery, an ex-con drug addict who had been found guilty of brutally killing his 5-year-old daughter Harmony and hiding her remains, which have not been found.
"Trying the second degree assault and second degree murder charges in a single trial jeopardized the defendant's right to a fair trial," the court decided.
The court upheld his convictions on related charges, including abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and assault.

According to the ruling, jurors were given strong evidence that Adam Montgomery beat Harmony months before her death, which improperly allowed them to draw the conclusion that he beat her again in December 2019, resulting in her death, in an incident where there was less evidence.

"The State's case on the second degree assault charge was strong," the court's opinion reads. "Three witnesses testified to observing the victim with a black eye in July 2019. Four witnesses, including two who observed the victim's black eye, testified that the defendant admitted striking the victim."

Only one witness linked him to the December assault believed to have resulted in Harmony's death, however. That was Kayla Montgomery, Adam's then-wife and Harmony's stepmother. She was granted a deal with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony, and the defense challenged her credibility.
"We are absolutely disgusted by the decision of the New Hampshire Supreme Court," said the adoptive parents of Harmony's brother, Jamison, Johnathon Miller and Bob Ward. "The reality is — more protection is in place for this monster than Harmony Montgomery ever received."
The murder case was remanded to a lower court, and Montgomery is expected to get a new trial on that charge.
Police arrested Montgomery in January 2021 after Harmony's mother, who did not have custody and was no longer involved with Montgomery, reported her missing.
Investigators in Manchester, New Hampshire, discovered the girl had been unaccounted for since 2019.

On Dec. 7, 2019, the day investigators believe Harmony died, she had soiled herself in her sleep, prosecutors said.
Her father allegedly beat her over the head, telling his then-wife Kayla Montgomery, "I think I really hurt her this time."

Harmony was never seen again.
The defense painted Kayla Montgomery as an unreliable witness and attempted to blame her for the crime, arguing during trial that she was the last person to see Harmony.
The court found that trying the murder charge alongside the related counts was unfair to Adam Montgomery as a result — even though his defense had requested the initial joinder. After receiving more evidence, he later tried to have the cases severed, unsuccessfully.
"While the jury heard no evidence that Kayla had ever physically assaulted the victim, it heard evidence from multiple witnesses that the defendant physically assaulted the victim in July 2019," the ruling reads. "Thus, there was a significant risk that the jury would draw the impermissible inference that because the defendant assaulted the victim before by striking her in the head, he must be the one who fatally assaulted her in December by again striking her in the head."
'Severe' Pentagon lockdown sparks emergency response as hazmat teams sweep area
Certain areas in the Pentagon went on lockdown Thursday morning due to an "air quality incident," Fox News Digital has learned.
An alert, shared with Fox News Digital, carrying a "severe" rating was sent to employees in multiple corridors of the building directing them to shelter in place. All other personnel were told to avoid the area.
"The Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants," chief spokesperson Sean Parnell told Fox News Digital. "Those systems have detected an air quality issue necessitating precautionary measures until we determine its significance. The Department is executing standard protection protocols, including a shelter-in-place order for the affected area. Response teams are in place and ready to support building occupants."

A hazardous materials team is scrubbing several locations in the Pentagon's A ring, the center-most location in the building, according to a Pentagon official.

Secretary Pete Hegeth's office and chairman of the joint chiefs Gen. Dan Caine's office are not located in the corridors placed under lockdown.
Systems detected a problem with the air quality in part of the building and a device picked up a biohazard scent, the Pentagon source told Fox News. Nothing has been found as of this writing.
The Arlington, Virginia, fire department confirmed on X it sent its Hazardous Materials team to support the Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s Hazmat team with the incident.
The last notable Pentagon lockdown was in August 2021, when a Pentagon police officer was killed during a violent incident at the Pentagon Transit Center.
The Pentagon has spent years developing systems designed to detect and contain airborne threats inside the building.
Following the Sept. 11 attacks, officials launched the Pentagon Shield program, which uses sensors, computer modeling and building ventilation controls to help identify chemical, biological and radiological hazards and limit their spread through the Pentagon's five-ring structure.
Building systems can adjust airflow and isolate affected areas while emergency responders assess a potential threat.

Horry, 55, was asked about the criticism the Indiana Fever star has gotten for complaining to the referees, and Horry said Clark needs to protect herself.
"You think about when you when you're the best, everybody want to knock you out. And I think a lot of people are going after her and for me, just play the game," Horry told Fox News Digital at The World Cup 2026 Kickoff Party Blue Carpet at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Fever fans at least weren’t complaining when Clark buried a game-winning 3-pointer to help secure a 78-76 win over the Washington Mystics on Monday. Clark had 19 points, five assists and three rebounds in the win.
The Fever have had a tumultuous start to the season, but are over .500 at 6-5. In 10 games, Clark has averaged 18.7 points, 8.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.
Horry played in the NBA for 16 seasons. He began his career with the Houston Rockets, spending four and a half seasons with them and being a key part of their championship-winning teams in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons. The Alabama native was then traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he spent half a season before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Horry was a key contributor during the Lakers' three-peat from 1999-2001 and earned his third, fourth and fifth career NBA titles. After spending seven seasons with the Lakers, Horry joined the Spurs, where he won two more championships in 2004-05 and 2006-07.
In 16 seasons, Horry averaged 7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin accused the Biden administration of turning a "blind eye" to widespread reports of sexual abuse targeting migrants during a Thursday press conference.
"We're going to enforce our nation's laws, and we're going to right the wrongs that the Biden administration turned a blind eye to," Mullin said. "It's horrific to what's happening right in our own country because of four years of a blind eye that allowed unvetted sponsors to come pick up 450,000 kids on our borders … their own reports [were] reporting that over a third of the females, regardless of age, was sexually assaulted before they made it to their border."
In May 2025, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, obtained Department of Health and Human Services data showing that 65,605 reports regarding migrant children were ignored or dismissed under President Joe Biden, including 7,346 reports of human trafficking. Within 100 days of assuming power, the Trump administration had opened dozens of legal investigations from the previously inactive reports.

During the press conference, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that three individuals, all purportedly illegal immigrants from Guatemala, had been indicted in the Northern District of Ohio for allegedly conspiring to smuggle more than a dozen children into the United States by "exploiting the loopholes created by the last administration."
"This is one example, one indictment, but it is not unique. There are over 15,500 super-sponsor cases that we have identified, along with DHS. And again, these sponsor cases are when somebody sponsors more than three children, unrelated," Blanche said.
Mullin took an emotional tone later in the press conference.
"What's inhumane about taking care of our kids?" he asked. "As a father of six with three young girls, I'll do whatever I have to do, I will. I will move heaven and hell to go find these kids."
"We're going to bring you to justice. We're going to charge you, and we're going to work side by side with Todd Blanch and DOJ to make sure you pay for your crimes," Mullin added.
A 2021 HHS Office of Inspector General report found that large numbers of child migrant sponsors were not properly vetted before minors were released to them, including 19% of sponsors who authorities never received FBI fingerprint or state child abuse and neglect registry checks.
ICE SWEEPS UP CHILD PREDATORS, RAPISTS ACROSS US AS MULLIN TAKES HELM OF DHS
While internal government probes uncovered problems in the Biden administration’s processing of migrant children, the administration did take some action in response to abuse concerns and sponsor-vetting failures.
In July 2024, for instance, the Biden administration sued Southwest Key, a company that operated a processing facility for unaccompanied migrant children, alleging that employees sexually abused and harassed the minors in their care. The administration also accepted recommendations for reform following the 2021 HHS OIG report.
The DOJ and Biden’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
DHS directed Fox News Digital to Mullin's comments during the press conference when approached for additional comment.
"We found 146,000 kids so far. Some of these kids claimed that they were raped over 600 times. I don't care who you are. If you can't stand for law enforcement to go find these kids, who are you?" Mullins said during the press conference.

SPLC’s tax exempt status under scrutiny as congressman accuses group of 'act of fraud'
EXCLUSIVE — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is being asked to strip the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) of its tax-exempt status, after a Republican congressman alleged their funding of extremist groups is "an act of fraud."
The plea from Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C., makes the case that while raking in millions under the guise of fighting hate, the SPLC showed a clear pattern of targeting conservatives on its infamous "Hate Map" while funding the activities of actual extremist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, as alleged in a Department of Justice (DOJ) indictment.
"The SPLC has reached a point where it's become extremely obvious that they are certainly not the organization anymore that they were maybe even founded to be, but they've become a strong left-wing political organization that is really just funding groups that most Americans are absolutely and would be absolutely appalled to know," Harris told Fox News Digital in a Wednesday interview.
The lawmaker's letter to Bessent establishes that a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization "must be organized and operated primarily for charitable, educational, or similar purposes and cannot engage in political activity," and explains why he thinks the SPLC is bucking that law.

"[T]he SPLC has consistently engaged in the partisan targeting of conservative groups by placing them on its so-called 'hate map,' alongside organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Aryan Brotherhood," the letter notes.
"Meanwhile, violent left-wing groups such as Antifa and Jane’s Revenge have been widely ignored by the self-described civil rights organization."
During a House Judiciary Committee hearing earlier this week, Harris, a pastor, referenced a major Biden-era scandal — the DOJ's monitoring of what it called "radical traditionalist Catholics." The Biden administration allegedly used the SPLC's guidance to justify the monitoring.

The Alabama-based nonprofit also lumped mainstream Christian groups, like the Family Research Council and Alliance Defending Freedom, into its "Hate Map."
And in 2012, crazed gunman Floyd Lee Corkins II attacked the Family Research Council office in Washington, D.C., and shot a security guard after he found out they were designation as an anti-LGBT organization on the SPLC's website.
"I mean, we could go on and on and list those groups, but they all have in common that they happen to be just conservative groups in this country that stand on conservative principles," Harris told Fox News Digital.
The North Carolina representative also tore into the SPLC over allegations the group funneled $4 million donor dollars into shell companies to fund the KKK and other extremist organizations, all while claiming to fight hate.
Harris claimed in his letter to Bessent this was "an act of fraud" rather than charity, and needs to be addressed as such.

"Through what we're learning in this indictment by the Department of Justice that even points out how this $4 million has been misused or used, that one example was that they actually funded a Ku Klux Klan rally and funded the cross burning and paid for the gas to burn the cross," he said.
He accused the SPLC of creating the racism it claimed to fight.
Harris referenced claims from this week's congressional hearing that the SPLC saw a spike in contributions after the deadly 2017 "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The group is accused of paying an informant to help plan the rally.
"That's the way these groups work because, again, it becomes a money-making machine," said Harris. "If they can keep things stirred up, if they keep things with people fighting, if they could keep people divided ... then they accomplish what they want to accomplish, which at the end of the day, is all about the almighty dollar."
