Giants' season-opening high comes crashing down as Jaxson Dart's knee injury overshadows Rams' blowout win
The New York Giants were riding high coming into Los Angeles to face a frustrated Rams team that returned home from a beatdown in Australia.
After defeating the Dallas Cowboys on their own home turf, the talk around the league after just one week was that the Giants could be a problem for the rest of the NFL in this John Harbaugh era.
But those giant expectations took a massive hit on "Monday Night Football" after quarterback Jaxson Dart was ruled out after a brutal hit led to a knee injury that now has the organization and fan base collectively waiting for MRI results with bated breath.

Once Dart left the game, and Jameis Winston took over for the Giants, the offense that surprised the Cowboys last week with its ground-and-pound nature struggled to find its footing against a revitalized Rams defense—one that lacked Myles Garrett, but featured the return of future Hall of Fame defensive tackle Aaron Donald at SoFi Stadium.
Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford looked more like the reigning MVP in this game compared to Week 1, and with tons of time in the pocket, he dissected the Giants’ defense as the Rams cruised to a 28-6 victory to get its first of the new season.

Now, things hang in the balance as the Giants await Dart’s MRI results, which should come on Tuesday. Dart was clutching at his knee after getting sandwiched between two Rams defenders that beat the Giants’ tackles off the edge, and while airborne, video replay showed his leg shift in an awkward way.
Dart was able to walk off on his own power, and ESPN’s Jordan Raanan even reported during the game that he tried to let the coaching staff put him back in the game. They refused to let him.
It's a good sign to see Dart’s fight to get back in the game, which could also showcase that his injury isn’t as severe as initially thought. OutKick's Armando Salguero reported a possible MCL could be what Dart and the Giants are looking at, but in a Week 2 filled with key quarterback injuries, every party is just hoping the 2026 season isn't awash for the second-year signal caller out of Ole Miss.
If Dart is to miss time, this new Giants regime will be tested to keep their lofty expectations afloat because, after watching what occurred on both sides of the ball, there’s certainly work to do.
On offense, while it’s a tough task for any backup quarterback to take over on a moment’s notice, the run game that worked so well in Week 1 was non-existent this time around. It certainly helped that Donald was back in a Rams uniform, but the rest of their defenders were solid at the line of scrimmage, limiting New York to just 44 rushing yards as a team compared to 165 in Week 1. Donald finished his first game back in two years with three total tackles, one for loss.
It also didn't help the Giants that star receiver Malik Nabers gave the team a scare when he left after getting a target from Winston, gripping at his right shoulder. He would eventually return to the game, but occurring just a few snaps between Dart's injury, Giants fans were thinking the worst yet again.
Then, on defense, Stafford didn’t have Puka Nacua, who was sidelined due to injury, but he did have future Hall of Fame receiver Davante Adams. With the Giants finding no amount of pressure on most of Stafford’s dropbacks, he couldn’t stop finding Adams for chunk plays.
It was a 31-yard touchdown pass to Adams for his first score of the game, a 64-yard catch-and-run set up a touchdown pass to running back Kyren Williams, and a signature fade route where Giants rookie cornerback Colton Hood had no chance after Adams’ release off the line. Adams finished the game with eight catches for 195 yards and two scores.
The Giants' pass rush, which was expected to be a potentially fearsome group this season, will be a talking point throughout the week as Abdul Carter, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and more couldn't get through the Rams' offensive line, which held up nicely for their 38-year-old quarterback to operate. And the injury bug continued toward the end of the game for the Giants, as Burns rolled his ankle. The cart came out to take him to the locker room, but he turned it down to walk on his own.
It was a tail of two sidelines where the Rams got back on the right path, while the Giants, in the midst of hoping for the best for their quarterback, need to go back to the drawing board with crucial home games ahead.
Trump was a 'caged lion' roaring to return to WHCA Dinner ballroom after shooting, Leavitt says
Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed new details on President Donald Trump’s behind-the-scenes response after shots were fired at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in April.
Leavitt said in a new episode of "Hang Out with Sean Hannity" that Trump was behaving like a caged animal and was adamant about returning to the ballroom, despite having just narrowly escaped from an alleged assassination attempt.
"He was like a caged lion backstage, like just roaring to get out, like, 'We gotta go back out there,’" she said. "And I'm sitting there like, ‘I don't know if I want to go back out there.’"

Minutes after the WHCA Dinner began at the Washington Hilton, a gunman, later identified as Cole Allen of Torrance, Calif., allegedly stormed the hotel while armed with weapons. Trump and Vice President JD Vance were quickly escorted out of the ballroom by members of the Secret Service.
Allen, who was quickly apprehended by Secret Service agents, allegedly wrote in a manifesto that his targets were Trump administration officials except for FBI Director Kash Patel.
Guests dived under tables as the gala, meant to celebrate White House correspondents, descended into chaos.
Yet, Leavitt said, the president was eager to return to the ballroom and willing to wait hours for the event to resume.
"[Trump] really was asking hard questions of his detail, like, ‘Why can't I go? I will wait all night. I don't care if it's 3 in the morning, get it started,’" Leavitt shared.
The former White House spokeswoman said officials even began making preparations to resume the dinner as she described Trump’s impatience to make a public statement immediately after the incident.

"[Trump] wanted to say something and the best way to say it was in the briefing room. And we did," Leavitt said.
Trump held a news conference at the White House later that night alongside top administration members, recounting how the shooting unfolded.
After the shooting, the president reignited calls to build a ballroom at the White House to create a space for safe and secure official events. Trump attended the rescheduled WHCA Dinner that took place in July.

Sylvester Stallone reveals what he said to Trump after surprise Hollywood ambassador appointment
Sylvester Stallone revealed that he was blindsided when President Donald Trump announced his appointment as a special ambassador to Hollywood.
Days before his second inauguration in January 2025, Trump shared a post on his platform Truth Social in which he named Stallone, Mel Gibson and Jon Voight as "Special Envoys," describing the role as a way for the three actors to serve as his "eyes and ears" in Hollywood and advise him on efforts to bring film and television production back to the U.S.
During a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the 80-year-old "Rocky" star recalled that he found out about the appointment while watching television.

Stallone told the outlet that he was hesitant about taking on the role because he didn't believe it was feasible. When asked if he had reservations after Trump's announcement, Stallone said, "Yes. Yes, because Hollywood, I guess it’s like feudal states."
"They have their little kingdoms," he continued. "You don’t go in and tell six studios how to do things. And Mel Gibson and Jon Voight, we’re kind of do-our-own-thing people. No, it won’t work."
The "Tulsa King" star recalled that he later explained his reasoning to Trump.
"I said thank you and ciao, because it’s impossible," Stallone said. "Hollywood works, and it will evolve."
"It’s corporate, and corporate people won’t want to hear me tell them about finance," he added.

"These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!"

At the time, Gibson, 70, shared that he was caught off-guard by Trump's announcement and did not have previous knowledge about his presidential appointment.
"I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised," he told Variety in January 2025. "Nevertheless, I heed the call. My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can."
"Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?" Gibson joked.
Though Stallone may not have been onboard with his role as a special Hollywood ambassador, the action star appears to have a friendly relationship with Trump and heaped praise on the president during a speech following his victory in the November 2024 election.
Days after the election, Stallone introduced Trump at the America First Policy Institute Gala held at the president-elect's Mar-A-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
"We’re in the presence of a really mythical character," Stallone said of Trump. "I love mythology. And this individual does not exist on this planet. Nobody in the world could have pulled off what he pulled off, so I’m in awe."
"When George Washington defended his country, he had no idea that he was gonna change the world," he added. "Because without him, you could imagine what the world would look like. Guess what? We got the second George Washington."
Stallone was later selected as a 2025 Kennedy Center honoree, with Trump personally naming him among that year’s recipients alongside George Strait, KISS, Gloria Gaynor and Michael Crawford.
The actor has backed Republicans, including John McCain and Trump, but his political history has not been strictly partisan. Over the years, Stallone has made financial contributions to both political parties, donating to various Democratic candidates and committees, including former President Joe Biden and the Democratic National Committee, as well as Republican campaigns.
Meanwhile, Voight, who is a staunch supporter of Trump, appears to have embraced his role as a special ambassador. He has met with the White House and advocated for policies aimed at bringing film and TV production back to the U.S., especially a federal film tax incentive. Voight has been working with his manager Steven Paul and Paul’s associate Scott Karol as part of his push.

After meeting with the trio at the end of last month, Trump threw his support behind a federal film and television production incentive, urging Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to "save" the American entertainment business.
In a Truth Social post on Aug. 31, Trump wrote that "Hollywood is a Complete and Total Disaster" and said there was "no incentive" for productions to stay there. He said meetings were being set up with leaders of both parties and urged Republicans and Democrats to "immediately craft Legislation to save the Movie, Television, and Entertainment Business in America."
Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and U.S. Representative Laura Friedman (D-CA) later issued statements in which they voiced their support for Trump's proposal.

While speaking with the Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, Voight was asked whether Stallone and Gibson were involved with his efforts.

However, Paul, who joined Voight for the interview, said, "Sly’s been doing his TV show, but Sly’s been very involved and he signed our letter."
Mamdani tells Trump banned White House outlets are welcome at NYC meeting
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday said NYC welcomed all members of the media for a joint meeting with President Donald Trump, who recently banned certain media outlets from the White House.
The remarks came during a press conference at Gracie Mansion, where a reporter asked Mamdani whether he had challenged Trump on his decision to bar CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
"I told the president that we're going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn. And that is something that I believe in, as everyone, no matter the opinion or the critique that we engage in," Mamdani said.
Trump then took the stage, defending his decision and addressing the subsequent suspension of presidential pool coverage by the remaining television networks, which included FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN and NBC News.

"It's interesting because they said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me. So I wasn't very worried about that. Look at all that press," Trump said.
He then explained why he chose to engage with the outlets at Gracie Mansion despite what he described as their failure to fairly cover his accomplishments, including winning the election, settling wars and improving economic numbers.
"I'm only doing it because I think the press also has an obligation," he said.
"We have the best economic numbers for the country in the history of our country. We have $21 trillion pouring in, the biggest number ever... Nobody's ever done what we've done," he added.
Trump then argued that allowing certain media outlets into the White House would be harmful to national security, accusing them of reporting what he called "fake news."
"I never get anything positive. It's always negative, even having to do with the war. We've done so well," he said, referring to Iran.
"You would think that an outlet would write at least reasonably well, but never. If you look at CNN, it’s fake news," he added.
"They're very bad for the country, very bad for national security. So I have that obligation. So we'll see how it works out," he said.
Maryland hunter's alleged mistake leaves Delaware mother dead
A Maryland hunter is accused of fatally shooting a woman after mistaking her for a deer while she walked through a Delaware field with her children, according to state police.
Walter Moorhead, 74, was arrested for manslaughter and other charges after he shot Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, on Friday evening in Ellendale, Delaware, State Police said in a press release.
Soto was walking through an open field with a man and two children at around 7:40 p.m. as Moorhead was hunting deer from a ground blind, which is a camouflaged structure used by hunters to hide from the sight of game animals.
According to police, Moorhead believed he saw a deer and fired his rifle, striking Soto.
State troopers responded to the scene and provided life-saving medical care before Soto was rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
Moorhead was was slapped with multiple felony charges — manslaughter recklessly causing the death of another person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.

He was released from custody after posting a $43,000 cash bond.
The incident remains under investigation.
Soto was described as a mother of five children and a "beloved" aunt, according to a GoFundMe page.
"Maria’s family is now facing the overwhelming pain of this sudden loss while also trying to make sure she is laid to rest with dignity," the fundraiser reads. "This heartbreaking situation has placed a heavy financial burden on the family at a time when they are grieving deeply."
The fundraiser was launched to help the family cover funeral services and the cost of sending her body to Guatemala. Roughly $12,000 has been raised as of Monday evening.
Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffers knee injury against Rams, possible MCL issue feared
The optimism and good tidings the New York Giants enjoyed through the first week of the NFL season are suddenly on hold as the team is busy evaluating the status of injured quarterback Jaxson Dart.
Dart, in his second NFL season, injured his left knee during the first series of the Monday Night Football game between the Giants and Los Angeles Rams.
The injury happened on a first-quarter hit when Dart was hit by Rams defenders both high and low. And the low hit seemed to cause his left knee to bend in a manner it is not meant to bend.
That's not all. The team also had a bit of a scare when receiver Malik Nabers left the game after a pass thrown his way fell incomplete. He was seen clutching his right shoulder.

Nabers returned after missing a couple of series nursing his shoulder on the bench.
The hit on Dart left the quarterback on the ground clutching at the knee of his forward leg when he throws. That is never a good sign.
The saving grace: Dart's leg was not planted on the turf when he was hit.
That allowed the entire part of the lower leg to bend with the knee.
So, this is not a season-ending ACL tear.

But Dart suffered some sort of MCL issue, according to an NFL source. If that is confirmed by an MRI scheduled for Tuesday.
"Yeah, we'll know more tomorrow," coach John Harbaugh said after the game. "That's in the neighborhood of it, I would say. We'll get an MRI tomorrow and have a really good feel for it, and it'll give you more information then."
Dart won't need surgery, but will miss some time. This is not, however, a season-ending injury.
"The fact that it's not that outcome that you're talking about, the devastating outcome, is really good news," Harbaugh said.
Dart limped off the field and was initially treated in the team's medical tent. Several teammates huddled outside the medical tent while Dart was inside, no doubt worried about the status of their starting quarterback.

Dart was eventually escorted to the locker room, limping there under his own power.
Backup quarterback Jameis Winston came on in his absence and was largely ineffective, throwing one interception without a touchdown and posting a passer rating of 37.7, which is bad.
Socialist, communist groups coordinate, promote 'spontaneous' anti-ICE protests in Austin
Media accounts reported that protesters "quickly organized" a spontaneous anti-ICE protest at an Austin, Texas, intersection following the shooting of a Venezuelan man by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
But a Fox News Digital investigation shows that the protests are being promoted and organized by a coordinated network of far-left socialist and communist groups, including the Democratic Socialists of America, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, which works closely with nonprofits funded by Neville Roy Singham, a communist American-born tech tycoon living in Shanghai.
Congressional lawmakers are investigating the Singham network for allegedly fomenting the image of "chaos" in the U.S., including anti-ICE protests from Minneapolis to the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, N.J. Sure enough, Sunday evening, BreakThrough News, a pro-communist media platform operated by BreakThrough BT Media, a nonprofit funded by Singham, published a "BREAKING NEWS" report from Texas with the headline: "Austin erupts in protest…"
AUSTIN ICE SHOOTING SPARKS FIGHT OVER VENEZUELAN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT'S DEPORTATION
The shooting occurred Sunday afternoon at about 12:56 p.m. Central Time near Anderson Square and Research Boulevard in Austin. Authorities said an ICE officer shot Wilber Rafael Garcés Pérez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan national, during a traffic stop. Perez was hospitalized in serious but stable condition and later placed in federal custody. Local officials said Austin police weren’t involved in the shooting, which is being investigated by federal authorities with assistance from the FBI.
About four hours after the shooting, local socialist and communist activists were already at the scene, waving flags of Mexico, pushing the incident through their national and Texas social-media networks and broadcasting footage of the growing crowd and confrontations with Austin police.
The headlines and descriptions of the demonstration have focused on the protest’s anti-ICE message without identifying the political or ideological infrastructure that helped organize and promote the event. Local media headlines included KVUE reporting that "North Austin ICE shooting draws large protest as tensions escalate," describing a spontaneous outburst: "What began with a handful of people gathered across the street from the scene grew into a much larger crowd over the course of several hours."
But the details of the Austin protest are important because they reveal that the demonstrations represent more than an unplanned gathering of residents responding to a breaking-news event, much like the protests in Minnesota and New Jersey and Minnesota.
SECRET SIGNAL CHATS REVEAL HOW ANTI-ICE AGITATORS COORDINATED NEWARK RIOTS
The shooting provided the immediate trigger, but the mobilization was amplified by organizations with explicit revolutionary socialist and communist ideologies, established propaganda outlets and long-standing ties to international movements aligned with the communist governments of Cuba and Venezuela. They each have pre-existing activist networks and online audiences that organized and promoted the protests.
The event also illustrates how rapidly established activist networks can convert a law-enforcement incident into a larger political action. Within hours, the groups distributed nearly identical claims, promoted the same location and used dramatic language describing the shooting as "ICE terror," "police violence" and part of a pattern of killings.
At about 4:19 p.m. local time, the Party for Socialism and Liberation’s national account, @PSLNational, posted an explosive message on X, announcing the shooting and shouting in capital letters, "BREAKING. MAN SHOT BY ICE AGENTS IN AUSTIN. It called on residents to protest ICE, declaring, "ICE OUT OF AUSTIN NOW!"
Right about then, the group’s Austin chapter shared the dramatic "BREAKING" graphic on Instagram, collaborating with its national headquarters and four Texas chapters in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth and Waco. By early Monday evening, about 24 hours later, the post had 5,402 likes, 2,016 reposts and 2,391 shares/sends.
Soon after on Sunday, at about 4:30 p.m. local time, the Austin chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America posted a graphic labeled "Emergency Demonstration/Vigil" calling on supporters to gather at 8121 Research Boulevard from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for a "spontaneous" protest.
"Join us at 8121 Research Blvd from 5-8 p.m. for a spontaneous protest and vigil against yet another instance of ICE and police violence," the post said.
The group later reposted the notice with an updated location and said the demonstration would continue until 7 p.m.
Right about then, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, an openly Marxist-Leninist group that has sent delegations to support communist regimes in Cuba and Venezuela, and its Austin chapter published its own hyperbolic material about the shooting. One graphic said, "ICE SHOOTS AN UNARMED CIVILIAN," while another described the incident as part of a broader pattern of "ICE violence and killings." Within 24 hours, the post garnered 620 likes, 214 reposts and 156 shares/sends.
The Freedom Road Socialist Organization openly says it is working to build "a new, revolutionary, communist party." In its own program, the group says it wants to replace capitalism through a socialist revolution. The group's program describes the organization as part of the communist movement. In July, the group said it "salutes the Communist Party of China" on the 105th anniversary of its founding.
For years, it’s also supported the Communist Party of Cuba, declaring, "Stand with socialist Cuba," as it praised the Cuban Revolution and called for an end to U.S. sanctions against Cuba.
Videos posted by the group showed demonstrators chanting, holding signs, blocking the roadway near the shooting scene and lighting fireworks.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation official manifesto describes itself as a "revolutionary socialist" movement that "will open the way to communism and the end of class society." The program describes the police and state institutions as tools of capitalist rule and calls for a workers’ government to replace the current system.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation functions as a key boots-on-the-ground mobilizer within the broader activist ecosystem, working alongside Singham-funded organizations such as the People’s Forum, BreakThrough News, CodePink and the ANSWER Coalition on protests, media campaigns and international solidarity efforts.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation also overlaps with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization through shared "anti-imperialist" pro-communist coalitions, while the Democratic Socialists of America often provides a broader layer of street-level organizing and political amplification.
The Party for Socialism and Liberation has participated in international "solidarity" efforts involving Cuba and Venezuela, along with the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, according to a communist publication, Fight Back! News. A self-described communist co-founder of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Brian Becker, has said the delegation traveled "as comrades in solidarity."
The facts surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Austin officials have called for transparency and an independent review, while federal authorities have said the ICE agent’s use of force is being investigated. But the protest organizers’ social media posts leave little ambiguity about the political and ideological objective of the protest.

At 5:44 p.m., @PSLNational posted a video from the scene, announcing, "LIVE: A crowd has gathered…", and moving from initial messaging to real-time amplification of the street protest. Its national and Austin accounts shared the video on Instagram synchronized with the band Rage Against the Machine’s song, "We’ve Got to Take the Power Back." It added the message, "Austinites flooding the streets where man shot by ICE: ‘ICE out of our neighborhoods,’" giving the illusion of a spontaneous "flooding" of "the streets."

By about 5 p.m. on Monday, a new call to action moved activists to Pearsal Detention Center, where local groups claimed ICE agents allegedly held the detainee in custody: "WE NEED YOU BOOTS ON THE GROUND…!!!"
Chris Murphy calls for 'regulating the internet' so people won't fall for a 'demagogue like Donald Trump'
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., suggested on Sunday that the government get involved in regulating the internet to make people less likely "to fall for a bulls--- demagogue like Donald Trump" in the future.
While appearing on the "I've Had It" podcast, Murphy discussed his book "Crisis of the Common Good," where he warned that America will be "stuck" with leaders like Trump unless more government action is taken to tackle loneliness and powerlessness among voters.
"Those are the two things I think Americans are going through right now," Murphy said. "They don't feel powerful at all, and they feel lonely. And so, government should build a set of rules in which people feel more powerful — that's why the minimum wage is so important — and people feel so more connected. That's why, you know, rebuilding healthy institutions in your town should be a project that government is involved in."

These efforts included regulating the internet, which Murphy said could sway people away from politicians like Trump.
"That's why regulating the internet so that you're spending less time alone on Instagram should be an important government project," he said. "And if people are feeling more powerful and less lonely, then they are going to be less likely to fall for a bulls--- demagogue like Donald Trump. And what I say in the book is that if you really think about the things that make you more connected and make you more powerful, they're not actually super partisan."
Murphy, a frequent Trump critic, continued to urge efforts to affect change.
"The book basically says unless you fix what's broken with the culture, you're going to be stuck with people like Trump for a long time," he added.
In a comment to Fox News Digital, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle called out Murphy, saying, "Chris Murphy is a lightweight, anti-American disgrace who lies for a living."
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for action to be taken against social media companies in an effort to protect young users. Many have suggested scaling back Section 230, which provides broad immunity to social media platforms for their content.
However, in light of recent discussions surrounding artificial intelligence (AI), some Republican lawmakers have expressed skepticism at efforts to regulate technology, suggesting experts outside of Congress should manage AI.
"I think the warning is real, and I think that AI is unbelievable — look, AI is going to cure cancer. AI is going to find solutions to get rid of diseases that we never thought we could get rid of, but it does need to have some oversight. It needs a kill switch," Rep. Jimmy Patronis, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital last week. "But again, I don't think Congress has the expertise to tell an emerging technology what's the best way to go."

A federal proposal that could change meal and rest-break rules for flight attendants is drawing opposition from major airline unions even as aviation experts applaud the plan.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a nationwide rule that would prevent state and local governments from setting their own meal and rest-break requirements for flight attendants and pilots.
Instead, federal aviation rules would apply — according to the agency's proposed rule document.

The proposal would affect existing state protections, including meal and rest requirements that have applied to some California-based flight attendants, the document states.
Under California law, employees generally must receive a 30-minute meal break when working more than five hours, according to the California Department of Industrial Relations. Employees generally must be relieved of all duties during that period for it to qualify as an off-duty meal break.
In its proposal, the FAA argues that different state requirements could interfere with airline operations and conflict with the safety responsibilities of flight attendants.
Flight attendants are responsible for handling emergency situations, including fires, medical incidents, evacuations and unruly passengers, according to the FAA document. Requiring a flight attendant to be completely off duty during a break could create a safety risk.
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), however, opposes the proposal — arguing that it could remove state protections without establishing a federal guarantee for meal and rest breaks.
The union said some flight attendants already work for hours without adequate opportunities to eat, drink, use the restroom or take care of other basic needs.
"While we understand compliance with state laws is not without its challenges, we are far more concerned about the safety impacts of flight attendants working under onerous working conditions," the unions wrote in their joint comments to the FAA.
The unions also argued that the proposed protections are "extremely vague" and do not provide enough assurance that airline policies will address both safety and flight attendants' needs.
"The proposed rule does little to ensure protections for flight attendants without specific contractual protections," the unions wrote.

The FAA's proposal does not prevent flight attendants from eating, drinking or using the restroom.
Instead, airlines would have to allow them to meet those needs while ensuring they remain available for safety responsibilities, according to the document.
Michael J. Boyd, president of aviation consulting firm Boyd Group International based in Colorado, told Fox News Digital that, in his opinion, the FAA's approach makes sense given the safety role of flight attendants.
Boyd is not connected to the rule developments and expressed his opinion based on his experience in the aviation industry.
"They're on duty," Boyd said. "You can't break like that in the middle of the sky."

"They have to be on duty because they're a safety function, just like pilots are, just like firefighters are," he added.
Boyd said he does not believe flight attendants would see major changes to their day-to-day work if the proposal is finalized.
"Nothing will change," he said. "All they're saying is that state rules do not supersede FAA rules."
Boyd also expressed concern that state break requirements could require airlines to add more flight attendants to provide coverage, raising costs.

Under the current federal system, meal and break arrangements can be addressed through airline policies and collective bargaining agreements, according to the FAA document.
Federal rules also require flight attendants to receive 10 consecutive hours of rest between duty periods, the agency noted.
The proposed rule has not been approved or taken effect.
