GIANNO CALDWELL: Sanctuary cities call it compassion. Patricia Fox calls it the ultimate price
This week, Patricia Fox stood before the House Judiciary Committee’s Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee and told lawmakers what sanctuary policies actually cost a family.
"My daughter, Carissa, was hit on March 28, 2025 by an illegal alien," she testified. "She was launched head first into a concrete barrier. The driver and passengers of the vehicle fled. Never checking to see if my daughter was alive." She continued: "Despite her initial prognosis, Carissa survived. Praise God. But survived and recovered are not the same."
Sanctuary city and sanctuary state policies have been championed from coast to coast as the most compassionate, resolute action a city or state can take. But, no one has really asked what they cost the citizens who actually live there. Patricia Fox paid the ultimate price for sanctuary policies in Colorado.

Carissa Aspnes was 22 years old and celebrating a new start. She had just returned home to Aurora, Colorado, from Chicago to launch a career as an esthetician, and on March 28, 2025, she climbed onto the back of a motorcycle to mark her birthday. Minutes later, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, Valeria De Los Angeles Bermudez Marcano, ran a stop sign, crossed three lanes of traffic, and slammed into the motorcycle. She and her passengers fled the scene, leaving Carissa unconscious on the road without checking whether she was alive.
Carissa survived. However, eighteen months later her mother is still living what survival actually looks like. Carissa underwent emergency surgery to remove part of her skull and relieve brain swelling. She is now minimally conscious, nonverbal, wheelchair-bound, and fed through a G-tube. "Every morning, I use a Hoyer lift to raise my adult daughter out of bed because she can’t sit up, stand or get herself up," Patricia testified.
Cariissa's physician says she needs two people to safely assist her. "Colorado Medicaid denied us in-home nursing," Patricia said. "So I figure it out." Medicaid denied the wheelchair Carissa actually needs, too. So Patricia blends her daughter’s food, feeds her through the tube, brushes her teeth, bathes her, and administers her medications, all while learning to read pain in a daughter who can no longer tell her where it hurts.
The financial toll is staggering. Between emergency surgery, rehabilitation, and the $3,000 to $4,000 a month in ongoing therapy, equipment, and care that insurance routinely denies, Patricia says Carissa’s medical bills already total seven figures. She has been trying to raise money to cover those expenses through a GoFundMe campaign. And the toll isn’t only financial. Patricia’s 19-year-old daughter has already begun preparing for the day she and her older brother must take over Carissa’s care. At 19, her future has been rewritten by a crash she had nothing to do with.
"One collision created an entire family of victims," Patricia testified.
And justice never arrived. Prosecutors dropped every charge against Bermudez Marcano except a single reduced Class 5 felony. As part of the plea deal, she was ordered to pay $15,000 in restitution, but only for the motorcycle. For Carissa’s brain injury, her wheelchair, her feeding tube, her family’s shattered future, there was nothing. "A motorcycle received more justice than my daughter," Patricia testified.
Bermudez Marcano was eventually deported, but only after Patricia’s family reached out directly to ICE’s Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) office, which was created to connect victims and their families with case updates, resources, and support as they navigate the immigration enforcement process against the person who harmed them.
Meanwhile, Colorado projected roughly $127 million from its General Fund this year for a program called Cover All Coloradans, which provides healthcare to people who lack qualifying immigration status, Patricia told the committee. Those are a state’s fiscal priorities laid bare: money for healthcare coverage regardless of legal status, while a citizen who was maimed by someone with no legal right to be driving on Colorado’s roads fights her own state’s Medicaid program for basic nursing care.

Patricia Fox is not a political operative. She is a mother who has become fluent in her daughter’s facial expressions, movements, and heart rate because that’s the only language Carissa has left. Yet she made the trip to Washington anyway, sharing her family’s story as one of the Angel Families whose lives were permanently altered by policies that hand driving privileges to people who have no legal right to be behind the wheel in the first place.
Carissa’s story is not isolated. Mary Ann Mendoza has spent over a decade fighting the same fight since an illegal immigrant driving the wrong way on an Arizona highway, three times over the legal limit, killed her son, Police Sgt. Brandon Mendoza, in 2014. Joe Abraham buried his 20-year-old daughter, Katie, after a previously deported illegal immigrant struck her car at nearly 80 miles per hour and fled the scene.

Roughly 19 states and Washington, D.C., now allow people to obtain a driver’s license regardless of immigration status, sometimes without requiring English proficiency to read a stop sign. This is not compassion. It is a public safety failure with a body count, and the families paying for it are the ones who did everything right. I started the Caldwell Institute for Public Safety and the Caldwell Foundation for Public Safety because I believe the safety of American citizens has to come before politics, on both sides of the aisle. Carissa Fox’s family should not have to choose between fighting Colorado Medicaid and fighting for their daughter’s dignity.
Every family in this piece did everything right. They followed the law, raised their children to do the same, and still buried them or, in Patricia’s case, watched a daughter’s future disappear in an instant. Sanctuary policies didn’t protect Carissa, Brandon, or Katie. They protected the people who took everything from them. Until we stop calling that compassion, more families will learn the same lesson the hard way.

Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were a part of a WWE stable known as the New Day and for over a decade they were the team to beat in the tag team division despite different iterations.
The New Day had seven WWE Tag Team Championship reigns among them and held the World Tag Team Championship for 483 days at one point. Despite Big E suffering a career-threatening injury, Kingston and Woods forged a path as a dominant team. The two won their last tag team titles at WrestleMania 41 and turned heel in their final run when they kicked Big E out of their group.

WWE parted ways with Kingston and Woods earlier this year, officially ending their chapter with the company. But their impact on the pro wrestling industry remained strong and it was underscored with their debut with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) over the weekend at All In.
Now known as Kofi and Austin Creed, the duo joined Swerve Strickland in a fight for the AEW World Trios Championship. They were re-introduced as The New Level and came out to a raucous crowd at Wembley Stadium in London. The three men outlasted six other teams to win the title.
Big E, who still works for WWE in a broadcaster capacity, reacted to his former stablemates’ major accomplishment. He posted a cartoon that featured a sign with the words, "Look how far you’ve come," emblazoned on it.
"Take a second today to recognize your own progress. You’ve made it farther than you think," he captioned the photo.
As others commented on the post, he called Kofi and Creed his "brothers."
"If you’re two living legends that are undervalued, sometimes you have to go to London!" he wrote in a separate comment.
The sport of pro wrestling includes a wide range of promotions that features WWE and AEW at the top of the food chain. Wrestlers change promotions all the time as everyone in the industry deals with the ebbs and flows of the business. Kofi and Creed will likely have a successful run in AEW and it’s important for those on the outside to acknowledge that regardless of the company.

The New Level aren’t resting on their laurels. The first AEW "Dynamite" after All In should be a doozy and Kofi and Woods are set to play a role in that.
They will join Strickland in an AEW Trios Championship defense against The Rascalz – the group that features Dezmond Xavier, Myron Reed and Zachary Wentz.
AEW has a robust tag team division that was put on full display after Adam Copeland and Christian Cage defended the AEW Tag Team Championship against the Young Bucks.
FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler), The Motor City Machine Guns (Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley) and The New Level were all seen in the ring after the match. Every team is gunning for the tag titles but it was made pretty clear who the top contenders were on Sunday.

Sarah Ferguson has made a career out of comebacks — and after seven months largely hidden from public view, the former Duchess of York may be preparing for another.
Ferguson, 66, may be ready to step back into the spotlight, with one royal commentator describing the former Duchess of York as a "chameleon" who has repeatedly managed to reinvent herself.
"Sarah Ferguson is forever the chameleon," British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. "She always seems to bounce back."
"The one person who believes in Sarah is Sarah!" Chard added.
One element of Ferguson's reported fresh start could be a new home in Britain. Chard said she understands Ferguson will be based in the Home Counties in a "£10,000 a month plush gated property with granny annex."
But a new residence may only be part of the attempted reset.
Chard said Ferguson has attracted interest from television producers and could use a documentary or interview to put forward her version of events.
"Sarah has admittedly made some silly decisions. However, it's reported that she is lined up to appear in a TV documentary when settled in Britain," Chard said. "This is one of the options to put her side of the story forward, essentially a ‘Tell All’ interview. She has been bombarded with TV production offers. However, she is considering working on her own programme to retain control."

After Andrew lost his royal titles in October 2025 and was forced to vacate Royal Lodge, Ferguson also had to find somewhere else to live. The former Duchess of York has reportedly been spending her time abroad. Ferguson had been staying at a chalet in the Austrian Alps, People reported.
The release of millions of DOJ documents in late January brought renewed attention to Ferguson's relationship with Epstein, including emails seemingly showing she remained friendly with him after his conviction. The fallout cost Ferguson charity affiliations, contributed to the closure of Sarah's Trust and damaged several of her business ventures.

Ferguson’s time away from the U.K. also coincided with mounting turmoil surrounding her ex-husband, the forme Prince Andrew, who was arrested in February amid the investigation into his ties to Epstein.
One subject Ferguson reportedly does not want at the center of her new narrative is Andrew.
"There is no mention of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor for now," Chard said. "Her priority is telling her story and the very mention of Andrew's name is a hindrance."
Separating Ferguson's future from the controversies of her past may prove difficult – royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams offered a harsher assessment of Ferguson's record, calling her "a disaster as an entitled and shameless member of the royal family."

"When she was a working royal she was a catastrophe from the start," Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital.
He pointed to Ferguson's "seemingly endless debts," the infamous "toe sucking" episode and the "fake sheikh disaster" as examples of controversies she managed to survive.
"Somehow she bounced back from each setback," Fitzwilliams said.
That ability to recover eventually culminated in a remarkable return to the royal fold. But Fitzwilliams believes Ferguson's latest controversy has placed her in a substantially more difficult position.

"The groveling, often farcical emails she sent to the deceased paedophile Jeffrey Epstein have finally landed her in disgrace, and she has been out of the public gaze for seven months," he said.
For Ferguson, who Chard says "always seems to bounce back," the next chapter could therefore become a test of whether her well-established ability to reinvent herself still works.
Fitzwilliams remains deeply skeptical.
"Whether anyone believes a word she says is another matter," he said.

Logan Webb and Paul Skenes face off as struggling Giants visit Pirates in pitching duel
Sports are fun for many reasons, but one main reason is that we expect one thing and then get something different. The idea that on any given night an underdog can beat a favorite, or that a bench player can have a career night, is what makes them so engaging. It can be incredibly frustrating as a sports bettor, but as a fan, it is awesome. As a sports bettor, there are a lot of people frustrated by these two teams and pitchers from this season as the Giants take on the Pirates.
The San Francisco Giants are one of the worst teams in baseball, which is quite surprising. The Giants are 57-81 for the season, and with their next loss, they will guarantee they are going to have a losing season. It was pretty unlikely they would go undefeated this month, but they are likely to lose between 90 and 95 games. This is another team in the league with plenty of talent, but they just couldn't put it together. Can it be blamed on their manager? The front office? Or is it just a lack of success from the pitching and offense combined?
I'd put most of the blame on the pitching staff as they carry a 4.34 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP into today's game. As usual with this pitching staff, the lone bright spot has been Logan Webb. This season, Webb is 8-8 with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He is in a bad situation tonight, though. On the road, he has a 4.16 ERA, and in night games, he has a 4.98 ERA. Both are worse than his home and day starts. He did have a rather strong August with only one bad start. In four outings, he allowed four earned runs over 26 innings. In the lone bad start, he allowed five earned runs in 2.2 innings. The Pirates hitters haven't been great against him, with just 12 hits in 58 at-bats.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were expected to compete for a Wild Card spot this season, but it hasn't gone as expected. The team is just four games under .500, so they still have a chance to end the season at .500 or better, but the chances of them making the postseason are slim. The hitting has improved, and that is a big reason for the improvement overall for the team this year. However, the pitching staff hasn't performed as well as needed this season despite having high hopes.

It is easy to have high hopes for the team when you have the reigning Cy Young leading the roster. However, it has been a bit of a disaster season for Paul Skenes. Look, a lot of pitchers would love to have Skenes numbers - 9-11 record, 3.79 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 175 strikeouts. The WHIP and strikeouts are the better numbers, but his ERA and record are a bit rough. In his young career, this 3.79 ERA is two full runs higher than it was in his first two seasons. Skenes has been better at night and at home this season, so maybe he is in his optimal spot here. He had a decent August, going 20.1 innings over four starts and allowing just seven earned runs.
This is the first time Giants hitters are facing Skenes, so he definitely has an advantage. It almost seems improbable that no one on their roster has had an at-bat against him. If you're looking for a player prop, I would consider under 0.5 hits for Bryan Reynolds or Oneil Cruz - both are strikeout-prone and don't make a ton of contact against Webb. My favorite prop, though, is to take under 6.5 strikeouts from Skenes. The Giants don't strike out a ton, and Skenes doesn't go overly deep into games, as the team is probably trying to conserve him for next year.

Tampa Bay Rays look to capitalize on struggling New York Mets as Freddy Peralta faces former team
The baseball season has entered the final month of the regular season. It is hard to believe how quickly everything is moving, but there is no slowing down, so we need to keep up. The NFL is about to start, College Football is back already, and the WNBA playoffs begin soon. Next month we get back the NHL and NBA, but first we need to finish this regular season and see how the playoffs stack up. The Mets won't be in the postseason, but today's opponent, the Rays, will be.
The New York Mets had another disappointing season. They are currently 62-76 for the season and have losing home and road records. The problem has never been talent. They have plenty of big names on their roster, which is part of what makes it so hard to understand why the Mets are losing. Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Bo Bichette, Luis Robert Jr., etc. These are all guys that have All-Star appearances and a lot of success in the past, but for whatever reason it just hasn't been able to click for the team.
The offense hasn't been great, but it isn't like the pitching staff has been much better. Tonight they send out Sean Manaea to the mound. He has bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen. Manaea has appeared in 28 games, and exactly half of them have been starts. Overall, he has a 4.55 ERA, and opponents are batting .258 against him. He really isn't that much different as a starter as opposed to as a reliever. August wasn't a great month, but it did start well. In the first two games, he turned in 13 innings and allowed just three earned runs. In the final three, he allowed 14 earned runs in 18 innings of work. Overall, Rays hitters are 5-for-25 against Manaea, with Yandy Diaz and Nick Fortes both having two homers off of him.
The Tampa Bay Rays are one of the best teams in baseball, and you probably couldn't list almost anyone outside of their rotation on their team. They are a bunch of professional hitters. Junior Caminero is a very good player, and he has racked up homers and RBIs and is even batting .282 this season, but he still isn't a household name. Overall, the Rays are batting .260 as a team, and they are only middle of the pack in runs scored, so they need to find a way to get more people across the plate, because they aren't struggling to get guys on base.
The good news is their pitching has been phenomenal this season, and that helps with lower-scoring games. Today they send out a guy they traded for from the Mets, Freddy Peralta. For the season, Peralta is 6-11 with a 5.11 ERA and a 1.41 ERA - part of the reason the Mets struggled, and he was traded away. His starts with the Rays have been a bit of a mixed bag. He had two starts where he allowed five or more earned runs. The other three outings were three starts of three earned runs or fewer. He's been great against Mets hitters, holding them to a .131 average against him.

I'm going to put out two player props here and a play on the game. One thing I want to do is take Lindor under 0.5 hits and under 0.5 hits on Christopher Morel. Lindor is 1-for-11 against Peralta with five strikeouts, and Morel is 2-for-11 with seven strikeouts. I think we get some good value on both guys tonight.

For the game, I am taking the Rays. Peralta is one of the better pitchers in the game when he is locked in. The Mets are a team that has struggled all year long, and I think this is one where Peralta can get the best of them. The Rays have had some success against Manaea and he isn't exactly a reliable starter. Give me the Rays on the moneyline.

Israel captures top Hamas commander in Gaza strike, defense minister says
The Israel Defense Forces captured Hamas' head of general security during a raid in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said.
An Israeli security official identified the Hamas leader as Mu'in al-Arabid, head of the General Security Apparatus, saying he was arrested during an Israeli incursion deep inside Hamas territory in Gaza. The IDF carried out airstrikes to cover the raid's withdrawal, adding that there were no Israeli casualties.
"A short time ago, a senior Hamas terrorist was arrested, and this is our policy: We do not wait for threats. Instead, we pursue Hamas terrorists, thwart them, and destroy their terrorist infrastructure. We have built a strong and unprecedented security zone in Gaza to protect residents and IDF soldiers," Katz said in a statement.

"Nearly 70% of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed, with no residents, no tunnels, and no homes, and the IDF controls the territory. Even after that, the IDF will remain in Gaza along defensive lines and ensure the security of the western Negev communities. Any attempt to bypass the security zone through aerial launches will be met with a harsh response," he added.
The raid comes weeks after President Donald Trump's administration demanded that Hamas disarm and give up control of Gaza in August. Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, traveled to Israel last month and said the IDF may receive U.S. backing to "finish the job."

The warning from Trump’s son-in-law followed a rare face-to-face meeting with Hamas in Egypt — only Kushner's second known meeting with the group.

Grandfather finds hidden treasure in plain sight as park officials 'dumbfounded' by discovery
A grandfather from Tennessee recently walked away from an Arkansas state park with a remarkable discovery: a yellow diamond.
He made the discovery at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Pike County, Arkansas State Parks announced Aug. 29.
At the time, Barry G. Smith of Germantown, Tennessee, was searching for diamonds in the park with his two granddaughters, Sage and Juniper.

"Not expecting anything more than a fun time, the family rented a wagon and basic kit from the park and began their diamond search," Arkansas officials said in a statement about the Aug. 16 discovery.
After about 30 minutes of searching, Smith spotted something glimmering in the East Drain section of the park — but initially mistook it for mica, a glittery and common mineral.
The grandfather placed the gem in his shirt pocket and didn't think much of the find until he had it inspected at the park's Diamond Discovery Center, he said.
"After further inspection, staff confirmed that Smith had found a gorgeous 2.29-carat yellow diamond," the release said.

The diamond surprised even park officials.
"I was dumbfounded when I first saw the diamond," facility supervisor Ralph Hall said in a statement.

Park officials indicate that yellow diamonds rank as the rarest variety found in the park, with the majority of visitors discovering brown or white stones instead.
"Yellow diamonds are created when nitrogen is absorbed into the crystal structure during formation," Arkansas State Parks noted.
"Nitrogen impurities absorb blue light and reflect yellow wavelengths, giving the diamond its yellow hue."
Smith told park officials he was "absolutely" excited about his discovery.

"I never expected to find a diamond here," the grandfather said.
He added, "The potential was there, but you never come here expecting to find one."
Smith chose to name the gem the Sage Juniper Diamond, after his granddaughters.

Park officials described the diamond as about the size of a black-eyed pea, noting that it was the third-largest diamond found at the park this year.
"As of this publication, 351 diamonds have been registered by park guests in 2026," the release added.

"An average of one to two diamonds is found at the park each day."
Officials did not release an estimated value for Smith's diamond.

An official said, "Anyone interested in having their diamonds graded or appraised can reach out to a certified gemologist, who has had special training to properly grade gemstone quality and estimate value."

Democratic Florida U.S. Senate candidate and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Angie Nixon accused President Donald Trump of pushing communism through his recent deal with Venezuela on Monday.
While appearing on MS NOW's "The Beat," Nixon was asked how she plans to appeal to Floridians during the Senate race, particularly Venezuelan and Cuban immigrants who feel apprehensive about the rise of socialism given their experiences in communist nations.
Nixon pointed to her record of fighting for affordability before suggesting Trump and her Republican opponent, Sen. Ashley Moody, are the ones who are actually pushing communism.

"Point out how Ashley Moody is so in total lockstep with Donald Trump," Nixon said. "You just had a gentleman on who was talking about how he has taken over Venezuela. That sounds like communism to me. They’re taking over their oil reserves and wanting to sell them off. That is the epitome of what communism is, and that is what Ashley Moody is okay with. And I am totally not okay with that at all."
Nixon referenced Trump's announcement on Friday that the U.S. had reached an oil deal with Venezuela involving more than 65 billion barrels of proven reserves. The deal came after the United States launched an operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January and began working with interim President Delcy Rodríguez.
When reached for further comment, the Angie Nixon Campaign told Fox News Digital, "Trump and Ashley Moody don't truly care about democracy or Venezuelans. If they did, they'd ensure the Venezuelan people had regime change before pillaging their oil and that Venezuelans in Florida were protected from deportation so they could live in peace."

Nixon's comments also come as she faces scrutiny for her ties to the DSA. Though Nixon is a DSA member, she has denied being a socialist and claimed that she joined in support of public housing and healthcare.
"Ashley Moody knows that I’m not a socialist," Nixon told "Meet the Press NOW."
"I joined the DSA because I believe in them in regards to fighting for adequate public housing, as well as fighting for quality healthcare, as well as making sure that we are getting our veterans off the street, taking big money out of politics, right?" she said.

Nixon has also denied that she supports DSA measures such as abolishing the Senate or drafting a new constitution. However, the Republican National Committee has warned that Nixon still supports several far-left initiatives.

"Socialist lunatic Angie Nixon wants to empty our prisons, open our borders, and raise your taxes to bankroll their far-left agenda," RNC spokeswoman Emma Hall said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"Every word out of Nixon’s mouth is an in-kind contribution to Republicans in Florida and across the country," Hall said.
The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

One of President Donald Trump's most persistent political foes has found common ground with him in their shared push to save Hollywood.
Trump wants to incentivize film and television production in Hollywood after years of job loss and other states and countries enticing projects to leave what has been the heart of entertainment in the U.S. for more than a century.
And Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., who once led the first impeachment against Trump and has maintained a strong opposition to him since he retook office, is on board with the idea.

"I am in strong agreement with the President," Schiff said on X. "Congress should immediately take up and pass a federal film tax incentive to bring back these good-paying jobs that we've lost to other countries."
"Let’s work together — Republicans and Democrats — to get this done, and bring the movie magic back to America," he continued.
Hollywood’s stature as an entertainment colossus has taken a hit over the last few years following the COVID-19 pandemic and the burst of the streaming bubble.
The industry has lost 49,000 jobs since 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Trump said on Truth Social after meeting with the actor Jon Voight, who serves as the U.S. special ambassador to Hollywood, that he was interested in launching federal tax incentives to stop the bleeding from Tinseltown.
Trump is urging Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress to tackle the issue immediately to "craft Legislation to save the Movie, Television, and Entertainment Business in America."
"Congress should approve, immediately, a Federal Production Incentive to create Entertainment Jobs in America. It can be done quickly, accurately, efficiently and, importantly, will benefit ALL of America," Trump said.
That comes with its own headaches, given Congress’ truncated schedule during September, the entire month of October being dedicated to campaigning for midterm elections and November officially launching the lame duck session of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Trump noted that film and television production has moved elsewhere in the country and abroad, leaving Hollywood a "complete and total disaster."
California is lagging behind other states and countries in its tax breaks for the industry. Recognizing the substantial post-pandemic drop in jobs, the state Legislature moved to more than double California’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program to $750 million, with sweeteners baked in to get productions to relocate back to California.
That program was undermined by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, however, when he installed a $5 million state corporate tax credit cap over the next three years.
Even with the strides taken to attract productions back to Hollywood, California is still behind Georgia and New York, which allocate more than $1 billion and roughly $800 million, respectively, in tax breaks for productions. Canada and the United Kingdom also offer generous tax breaks, attracting production away from the U.S. entirely.
