Country star, former college football player Lee Brice rips NIL, pro players going back to college
The state of college sports, particularly the "money sports" of football and basketball, is in a pretty precarious position right now.
Between the increasingly bloated NIL budgets (that fans sometimes find themselves on the hook for), a crazy transfer portal period every winter, and professional players trying to find their way back onto college rosters, it's getting harder to feel the same passion for the game many once held so dearly.
But you don't need to take my word for it, even former college athletes from a time not-too-long ago are voicing their displeasure with the current state of college football.

One of those former college athletes who is fed up with it all is Lee Brice.
The country music star was once a scholarship player for the Clemson Tigers, and he joined the "Tomi Lahren is Fearless" show to discuss the issues plaguing his favorite sport.
"I'm not a fan of the way things have changed," Brice said.
While he doesn't disagree with the idea of paying college athletes who bring in millions of dollars in revenue to their universities, Brice was expecting there to be more rules in place.

"In the NFL, you go and sign a contract. You can't just leave," Brice states. "But in college, you can go get paid all that money and then go, 'I just want to go somewhere else.'"
That lack of commitment, as Brice puts it, isn't teaching the young men who are having all this money thrown at them any of the values they will need as they get older.
The need for guardrails in the college game is precisely why Congress has become a battleground for paying college athletes, culminating in the Save College Sports Act which has been hotly debated on both sides of the political aisle.
It's getting to the point where hardcore fans like Brice can't even stomach watching the game he used to love.
"It's really hard right now to watch college football, because it used to be, it was all passion," Brice admits. "They devoted themselves to this one team for four years or five years. And now... there's just no devotion. And you kind of lose the magic of what college football was. So overall, no, I don't like at all where it's at. I think it could have been done better."
Another hot button issue Brice burned on was the topic of players on NFL rosters trying to make it back into the college game.

"It's like once you go to college, even if all you did was work out with them for the summer, you could go back to your high school and it would literally be like... it's just a different level," he revealed.
"When your brain and your mind and your body gets to a different level. You just have a really big advantage."
Luckily, coolers heads prevailed and the LSU Tigers never rostered the players they were trying to land from the NFL, but as Brice brings up, it would have given Lane Kiffin a decided advantage had they actually gone through with it.
"I was like, man, that's not cool," he said, shaking his head.

Mike Florio thinks the New York Giants should consider replacing Jaxson Dart with–wait for it–Colin Kaepernick
When New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a serious knee injury on Monday night, we knew one of the usual suspects in sports media would call for the team to sign – who else? – Colin Kaepernick.
They do it every time a team loses its starting quarterback.
The question was who would make the claim first. The list of candidates included, but was not limited to, Jemele Hill, Dan Le Batard, Mike Florio, Mina Kimes, Stephen A. Smith, Mark Jones and Bomani Jones.
Mike Florio is the winner.
On Wednesday, the far-left sports blogger suggested the Giants bring in Kaepernick.
"With the Giants now desperate for quarterback help — and with Jake Haener and Brandon Allen as the most viable options behind new starter Jameis Winston — why not bring Kaepernick in for a look?" Florio wrote.
Florio tried arguing that Kaepernick would be a natural fit for the Giants’ offense.
"Harbaugh’s New York staff includes Greg Roman, who was the offensive coordinator during Kaepernick’s first four years in San Francisco. It would be easy, in theory, to configure the offense to fit Kaepernick. If Kaepernick still has the skills he had when he last played," he continued.
Although Florio acknowledged that Kaepernick might not impress during a workout, he concluded that "there’s no reason not to give it a whirl."

There are multiple reasons not to give Kaepernick a "whirl," as
Florio put it.
For one, it would be a waste of time. It is Week 3. The Giants lost Dart for the season. Jameis Winston looked unplayable Monday night against the Rams. The team doesn't have time to work out a quarterback for mere public-relations purposes.
And that is all trying out Kaepernick would accomplish.
Kaepernick has not played professional football in a decade. He was not particularly good the last time we saw him. In his final NFL season, 2016, he posted a 49.2 QBR and served as a backup to Blaine Gabbert.
He is now approaching age 39 with a decade’s worth of rust.
In all likelihood, no athlete could take 10 years off and immediately compete in the NFL. Kaepernick can claim that he trains every morning, but there is no substitute for playing football.
Florio’s no-harm, no-foul argument technically applies to any quarterback the Giants could work out, including players from the UFL who have far more recent playing experience than Kaepernick.
What’s more, the same downside that existed in 2017 remains today.
Any team that works out Kaepernick invites an immediate circus of scrutiny and racial hysteria. In fact, Florio says he is suggesting the Giants make the call because head coach Jim Harbaugh considered Kaepernick back in 2017.
See, the Florios and Jemele Hills of the world would not be satisfied if a team simply gave Kaepernick a look. They would instantly chastise that team as racist if it did not sign Kaepernick and hand him the starting job.

As we have argued for years, Kaepernick is not out of the NFL because teams have overlooked some hidden superstar. He is out because the downside of signing him far outweighs the upside.
He is a distraction, and his play isn't good enough to justify the attention that would follow.
Signing Kaepernick would turn the Giants into a topic not only on sports television but also on cable news. That was the case in 2017, it is even more so now.
At this point, you have to wonder what Florio’s intentions are.
Perhaps he is trying to compensate for his vulgar past by shilling the far left’s favorite athletes. Maybe he is signaling his virtue. Or perhaps his brain has been scrambled by a severe case of Trump derangement syndrome and too much social media.
In any event, Florio’s latest blog calling for the Giants to work out Kaepernick is embarrassing. It undermines his credibility and makes him look like a partisan stooge desperate for attention.
Dashcam captures terrifying moment lightning nearly strikes Utah truck driver
A truck driver on a Utah freeway narrowly missed being struck by lightning amid severe weather earlier this week.
Video of the incident appears to show the moment a lightning strike hit Interstate 84, near the mouth of Weber Canyon, just feet away from a moving truck on Tuesday night, ABC4.com reported.
Motorist Tucker Ralphs captured the video on his dashcam as he was commuting home.
"Lightning struck the edge of the freeway feet from a truck just ahead of me," he told Storyful, adding that it was "louder than you can imagine, with a very sharp ‘crack’ and ‘boom.’ Super bright, then gone in an instant."
The National Weather Service confirmed to the news outlet that the area experienced a thunderstorm. Data from the agency showed that a lightning strike hit the side of the freeway at about 9 p.m. local time.

AP invokes lynching history in Mississippi hanging death after Black man is charged with murder
The Associated Press faced criticism Wednesday for invoking America's history of lynchings in coverage of a Black Mississippi woman found hanging from a tree, even after a Black man was charged with her murder and authorities said they had not established a motive.
The AP reported that the death of a 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, who was found behind an abandoned Jackson home Aug. 3, had "stirred distressing memories of the grim history of lynchings across the U.S. South." The report also identified murder suspect Jarques Ratliff, 51, as Black, noted he pleaded not guilty and acknowledged that police and prosecutors had not announced a suspected motive.
Media Research Center Video host Justine Brooke Murray criticized the AP's framing in a statement Wednesday to Fox News Digital, arguing the wire service blurred the line between journalism and activism.
"In this most recent case, a more accurate name for the AP is ‘the Activist-Press.’ The broader concern is that the AP, specifically, appointed their own guidelines as the gold standard for objective journalism," Murray said. "They've established a set of rules for the vocabulary everyone else is expected to regurgitate, and with that, established themselves as the arbiters of truth. How much reality must they rewrite before the others stop following suit?"
Murray also accused major media organizations of applying inconsistent standards when race or terrorism becomes part of a developing news story.
"If a victim has preferred minority status among elitist media organizations, they will often concoct hate crime fantasies and pass it off as the indisputable truth," she said.
"They're too self-important to bother correcting themselves when their imaginary White boogeyman turns out to be Black. In the same breath, they'll lecture us not to jump to conclusions each time an Islamist shouts 'Allahu Akbar' before blowing up busy American streets, if they're not shamelessly race-swapping suspects."
Fortune's mother, Christy Spivey, also told the AP she did not believe her daughter's death was racially motivated. Spivey is White, while Fortune's father is Black.
Spivey described the circumstances surrounding her daughter's killing as personal.
"I think this is something very personal, very personal," Spivey said.
The controversy followed reporting by several major news organizations that initially emphasized Fortune's race while omitting Ratliff's race when reporting his arrest. The AP's initial arrest report described Fortune as a "Black woman" but did not identify Ratliff as Black, though the wire service included his race in subsequent coverage.
Fox News Digital reached out to the AP for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
The AP's News Values and Principles state that its journalists follow standards intended to safeguard its reporting from "bias and inaccuracies." The organization also states that it seeks to report news accurately, honestly and impartially and that corrections should be made "fully, quickly, transparently and ungrudgingly."
Ratliff was arrested after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office classified Fortune's death a homicide. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the investigation remained active and additional arrests were expected. Police have not publicly detailed a motive or the precise nature of Ratliff's association with Fortune.
Brackney previously acknowledged the attention surrounding the case and Mississippi's racial history while stressing that investigators were relying on evidence rather than speculation.
"We understand this case is being viewed through a broader lens — a global lens — and we do not dismiss those concerns," Brackney said.
Hackers hijack verified streaming account to spread malware, researchers find
You probably know to be suspicious of a strange pop-up or a random website asking you to download something. But what happens when the ad comes from a verified account belonging to a company you recognize? That is what made a recent malware campaign involving HBO Max so concerning.
Researchers at Hudson Rock found that cybercriminals hijacked HBO Max's official, verified Reddit account and used it to push 108 distinct malicious ads over roughly 48 hours. The ads promoted HBO Max downloads along with AI tools, developer software and Mac utilities. Because they appeared under a verified corporate account, potential victims had one less reason to question what they were seeing.
You do not need HBO Max to be exposed to this type of attack. The larger lesson involves how criminals can borrow credibility from verified accounts and familiar companies to get people to lower their guard. And once you click, the attack can take a surprisingly simple turn.

SCAMMERS ARE BUYING GOOGLE ADS TO STEAL BANK LOGINS
The incident first surfaced after a Reddit user spotted an advertisement posted by the verified u/hbomax account. The ad promoted what appeared to be a native HBO Max application for macOS. HBO Max does not currently offer a native app for Mac computers. Its support page directs Mac users to stream at HBOMax.com. The user followed the advertisement to a convincing landing page. However, clicking the download button did not start a normal file download. Instead, the website displayed a prompt telling the visitor to copy and paste a command into Terminal. That request should immediately raise a red flag. Elsewhere in the broader PasteSwitch operation, Windows users could be routed through Run or PowerShell-based attack paths. Researchers found that the Windows branch could use PowerShell and other tools to eventually load malware directly into memory.
The technique behind the campaign is known as ClickFix. Rather than relying entirely on a malicious download, ClickFix gives you instructions that lead you to execute the attack yourself. The prompt may pretend that something went wrong with a CAPTCHA. Another version may claim you need to fix a browser problem or complete an installation. A malicious webpage can even place a command onto your clipboard. Then it tells you where to paste it. That little sequence can feel like ordinary troubleshooting, especially when the page looks professional and the ad came from an account you trusted. In the HBO Max campaign, Hudson Rock says the technique relied on getting the victim to execute attacker-supplied code through Terminal. That approach can bypass some protections designed to stop malicious browser downloads. The warning sign I want you to remember is simple: A website should never need you to paste an unfamiliar command into Terminal, PowerShell or the Windows Run box to prove you are human or install ordinary consumer software.
The fake HBO Max download was only part of what researchers uncovered. Hudson Rock says attackers used the compromised Reddit account to push 108 distinct advertisements during the roughly 48-hour campaign. The ads shifted between multiple software lures as domains were taken down or abandoned. The researchers counted:
That rapid switching shows how attackers can reuse the credibility of one compromised account while changing the websites and software names placed in front of victims.
Hudson Rock and researchers from ADAMnetworks connected the HBO Max campaign to a broader operation they call PasteSwitch. The name describes what stays consistent across the operation: victims paste a command supplied by the attacker while the delivery system changes what comes next based on the visitor, platform and campaign.
That means two people clicking similar malicious ads may not necessarily receive the same malware. On Macs, researchers found several PasteSwitch payload paths. MacSync could steal browser credentials, Gecko browser profiles, Telegram data, Apple Notes and macOS passwords. Researchers also documented an AMOS helper chain that could maintain access to an infected device.
Another part of the operation used fake versions of cryptocurrency wallet apps, including Ledger, Trezor Suite and Exodus. Those fake apps were designed to steal 12- and 24-word cryptocurrency wallet recovery phrases. That means one bad command could expose far more than the browser tab you were looking at.
CLICKLOCK MAC MALWARE LOCKS APPS UNTIL YOU GIVE IN
PasteSwitch could also recognize Windows visitors and change its attack. Researchers found a Windows branch that used mshta and PowerShell. One route delivered a malicious file disguised in an MP3/HTA format before creating a scheduled task and launching PowerShell.
Later stages could inject the Amatera Stealer directly into memory without first writing the final malware to disk. Researchers also found a technique designed to make malicious traffic appear as though it were communicating with Facebook, potentially making basic network monitoring less useful. That level of technical complexity sits behind a remarkably simple first step: convincing someone to paste a command.
Researchers connected PasteSwitch to another dangerous tool: cryptocurrency clipboard hijackers. The operation delivered malware known as AnimateClipper and ZigClipper. These tools can monitor the clipboard and replace cryptocurrency addresses when a victim copies or pastes them.
So, you might carefully copy the correct wallet address, paste it into a transaction and unknowingly send the money somewhere else. Researchers also found that the malware used Binance Smart Chain contracts to retrieve changing command-and-control domains. Between March and July 2026, researchers observed 36 changes made by the same attacker-controlled address. That helped the operation keep switching infrastructure as domains became unusable.
Most of us make quick trust decisions online. A recognizable company name can make an ad feel safer. A verification badge adds credibility. When both appear together in a paid advertisement, the whole thing can look vetted. But verified accounts can still get compromised.
Hudson Rock says the attackers took advantage of HBO Max's trusted advertising identity during the campaign. The polished assets also helped lower the skepticism people might normally apply to an unknown online advertisement. That changes how we need to think about ads.
If an advertisement offers software you want, open a new browser tab and find the company's official website yourself. For apps, check your device's official app store. Those extra few seconds could stop the attack before it reaches your computer.
Reddit has now confirmed that an HBO Max account authorized to run advertisements on its platform was compromised and used to distribute malicious links. In a statement provided to CyberGuy, Reddit said:
"We recently learned that an HBO Max account authorized to run advertisements on Reddit was compromised and used to run ads containing malicious links. After learning of the issue, we locked the account, removed the ads and began working with HBO Max to strengthen its account security. At this time, we have not identified any impact to other Reddit advertising accounts."
We also reached out to HBO Max for comment but did not hear back before our deadline.
ClickFix has spread quickly because the attacker convinces the victim to take the final action. Huntress says ClickFix accounted for 53% of the malware loader activity it observed during 2025, based on its endpoint and identity telemetry. Attackers also keep changing the lure.
We have already seen fake CAPTCHA prompts spread through thousands of compromised websites and bogus Windows updates use similar techniques. Compromised websites can also display fake verification prompts designed to push visitors toward dangerous commands. The design may change next week. The request to run an unfamiliar command remains the behavior to watch for.
Apple has added another layer of protection against some ClickFix attacks. On macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later, Terminal may warn you when pasted text resembles a potentially harmful command. The warning explains that scammers sometimes persuade people to paste commands that can compromise their Mac or privacy. That protection can help, but users may not see a warning for every malicious command. Attackers also continue adjusting their techniques. Your own judgment still plays a major role.
'THE ODYSSEY' STREAMING SCAM COULD STEAL YOUR BANK INFO
A convincing ad can get anyone's attention. These steps can help you recognize the warning signs before one bad click turns into a bigger problem.
A familiar logo or verification badge cannot guarantee that the person controlling the account today is the legitimate owner. When possible, visit the company's official website directly instead of clicking an ad.
If a webpage asks you to open Terminal, PowerShell or the Run dialog and paste something, close the page. Ordinary consumer software rarely requires you to run an unfamiliar command manually.
Use the developer's official website or your device's app store. Be especially careful when an advertisement suddenly offers a desktop application or special download you have never heard of.
Some ClickFix pages can copy malicious text onto your clipboard. If your browser or security software warns that a site copied something unexpectedly, take that warning seriously.
Security updates can add protections against newer attack techniques. Install updates through your operating system settings or the software's built-in updater.
Strong antivirus software can help block malicious websites and detect malware if an attack gets past your browser. It gives you another layer of protection when a convincing page slips through.
Disconnect the computer from the internet and run a full security scan using trusted antivirus software. From a clean device, change passwords for sensitive accounts, starting with your primary email account. Then review financial accounts and cryptocurrency wallets for activity you do not recognize.
An infostealer may capture passwords and browser information. Multifactor authentication can make stolen credentials harder to use, although some session-stealing malware can get around normal login protections.
What caught my attention here was how quickly something dangerous could start to feel legitimate. The advertisement came from a verified corporate account. The page looked polished. Then the instructions presented themselves as a normal installation step. That combination can get past the skepticism many of us have learned to apply to obviously shady emails and suspicious websites. So I would focus less on how professional an advertisement looks and more on what it asks you to do next. The moment a website tells you to open Terminal, PowerShell or another system utility and paste an unfamiliar command, stop. Hackers will keep looking for ways to borrow the reputation of companies people already trust. We need to adjust our instincts as those attacks change.

Mamdani roasted for staying tight-lipped on 'war criminal' Pezeshkian after raging about Netanyahu
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani repeatedly branded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "war criminal," but faced criticism for remaining largely tight-lipped about Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
While Mamdani has labeled the Iranian government "brutal" and cited its "systematic repression of its own people," critics railed against him for declining to use similar language about Pezeshkian, who arrived in the city on Wednesday.
"Mayor Mamdani, you said war criminals who set foot in New York should be arrested. Good news. One is in New York city this week," said Iranian-born journalist Masih Alinejad, who was subjected to an assassination attempt near her Brooklyn home while Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei was still alive.
"If you have the courage to talk about arresting those responsible for crimes against humanity, start with the man sleeping five miles from your office," Alinejad tweeted.
She invited Mamdani to view the FBI files about her case, in which several men attempted to kidnap her in Brooklyn.
Director of National Intelligence Walter "Jay" Clayton said in January that the Iranian regime coordinated a murder-for-hire plot against Alinejad because of her efforts to speak out against its human rights abuses, while federal authorities sentenced one U.S.-based conspirator to 15 years.
"The government of Iran, a sponsor of terrorism, assassination, and espionage around the globe, has engaged in a campaign of assassination plots in the United States and abroad targeting those who oppose the regime," Clayton said in a statement.
MAMDANI MAKES EYEBROW-RAISING CLAIM ABOUT NETANYAHU PROTESTS AHEAD OF NYC VISIT
Meanwhile, Mamdani has said Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City and has called him an "architect" of "genocide." No similar statements about Pezeshkian could be found.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani for comment.
National security expert and ACT For America founder Brigitte Gabriel also criticized the mayor over the discrepancy.
Gabriel, who has said she survived a terror attack during the 1975 Lebanese Civil War in Lebanon, now lives in the U.S.
"[The] Iranian President on American soil — while we are still in open conflict with Iran. 18 Americans dead. Thousands of Iranians slaughtered. And he’s getting a visa, a hotel, and a UN microphone in New York," Gabriel fumed on X.
"Where are the war crimes charges? Where’s Mamdani to arrest him while he’s in NYC?"

Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon told reporters Tuesday that Mamdani should stop attacking his nation’s government and turn his attention to Pezeshkian’s administration.
"Focus on the problems of the City of New York and stop with promoting anti-Semitism, stop supporting Hamas, and stop engaging with the Iranian regime," Danon said.
Those comments came weeks after Mamdani’s international affairs liaison sought to arrange a meeting with Iranian U.N. Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani.
Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Tom Cotton told Fox News the disparity in Mamdani’s rhetoric is stark.

"Is Zohran Mamdani threatening to arrest butchers from Iran who have killed tens of thousands of their own people, or genuine war criminals from other countries?" Cotton, R-Ark., asked.

"No. The one person he cites is the leader of the Jewish State of Israel."
While Mamdani met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday, he said afterward the two leaders will continue to have radically different views on Israel and the conflict in Iran.

First lady Melania Trump touted the outsized role women play in the American and global economies during a keynote speech at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Wednesday.
"People still do not fully understand the full scale of women's power in the global economy. Women are not just a part of [the] marketplace, simple participants," she said while speaking at IMPERIA, the first invite-only global summit at the NYSE designed exclusively for female CEOs and executives.
"We are its foundation and we are its infrastructure," she continued.
Ringing in the morning bell at the exchange, Trump also made the case that women remain a latent asset in the marketplace.
"The world's biggest untapped economic force is not a new market, a breakthrough technology or an undiscovered natural resource. It is women coming together as owners," the first lady said.
She then painted a picture of what the market would look like absent the driving force of female impact.
"Remove women as consumers, investors, leaders, caregivers, innovators and managers of household finances and the modern economy would not work as it does today," she said.
"Remove women from the workforce and we would lose doctors, engineers, bankers, lawyers and millions of other professionals. Remove women from the unseen and ignored economy of care, childcare, running households, home teaching and caring for elderly or sick family members and the support structure that lets others work for pay begins to collapse. Remove women from capital formation and we lose investors, shareholders, asset managers, property owners, retirement savers and those who protect intergenerational wealth," Trump continued.
The first lady then closed with a plea for the world, and especially the women present, to invest more in women.

Ottawa Senators owner claims Keith Tkachuk and Matthew Tkachuk swayed Brady's trade request
The NHL preseason has begun after what has to be one of the wildest offseasons in recent memory.
One of the biggest parts? Well, that had to be the Ottawa Senators dealing Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers after the Team USA star requested a trade.
Now, the Senators' owner, Michel Andlauer, isn't holding back on why he believes that trade happened. Tkachuk, who was the Senators captain, faced lots of questions after the team's first-round playoff exit about whether or not he was committed to the organization.
By all accounts, he was, as well as to the local community.
"In his eight years with the Ottawa Senators, and during his time as captain, he was an exemplary captain for us and leader and role model," Andlauer told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun. "He cared about the community. He and his wife, Emma, did more than any other player. The Boys and Girls Club — he cared deeply. And the fans knew it. Our fans are loyal and they’re intelligent. And they loved Brady."
However, news broke that Tkachuk had asked for a move, and the Senators got it done by sending him to Florida, where he joined his brother, Matthew.
Andlauer made it clear why he thinks things suddenly changed for Tkachuk.

"Blood is thicker than water, and let’s just say that his father (ex-NHLer and soon-to-be Hall of Famer Keith Tkachuk) and his brother got in his kitchen," he said. "Ultimately, the decision was made to go and play with his brother. It’s a decision that was out of our control to a certain degree. But you have to want to play for Ottawa. And right to the end, our fans were behind Brady — even after Team USA won gold. I have no doubt in my mind."
Whoa.
Now, it's important to note that Brady himself has denied this claim.
But one thing is certain: you'll want to tune in to see what happens when the Cats go to Ottawa on October 21.
Things could certainly get interesting.
Sheriff's deputy saves man from fiery wreck after high-speed chase ends in crash
A sheriff's deputy pulled a screaming man from his burning vehicle moments after he led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.
According to officials, the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted the suspect driving about 20 miles per hour over the speed limit on State Highway 104 in Kingston, Washington, around 11:30 p.m. Monday.
The driver refused to pull over and then accelerated, reaching speeds of 111 miles per hour, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy said he lost sight of the suspect until he noticed tire marks on the road and billowing smoke nearby. He then discovered the man had driven his SUV into a yard, where it slammed into a tractor and burst into flames, according to photos and body camera footage.
In video released by authorities, the deputy first tried to get the man out through the driver's side window by breaking it with his flashlight. He abandoned that idea after the trapped man shouted, "I can't get out that way!"
The deputy moved to the passenger's side door and began repeatedly slamming the handle with the edge of his flashlight, all while the flames from the car's engine grew higher and hotter, the bodycam footage showed.

Eventually, a Port Gamble police officer arrived with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire. The video then cut to the deputy pulling the man out of the mangled car.
North Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews arrived and airlifted the man to a hospital so he could be treated for his injuries.
He faces two charges, including attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving.
The man was not identified by authorities.

The IRS recently did something federal agencies almost never do: admit their approach wasn’t working.
They conceded that the approach to the Conservation Easement program tax assessments is flawed and often unfair.
In a press release last month, the IRS rightly stopped its assault — at least for now — on more than a thousand separate groups nationwide, comprised of about 250,000 individuals, who have participated in land conservation easements. The agency decided to withdraw its own arbitrary deadlines under its punitive settlement initiative for these donations that taxpayers, relying on qualified appraisals and professional advice, believed complied with federal law.

This longstanding program provides tax incentives for people who have put hundreds of thousands of acres of pristine forest, ranch, and farmland into a "conservation easement" — preventing it from ever being developed. Despite some of its flaws, including fraudulent property assessments, the program has long been supported by Republicans and Democrats.
The IRS made a concession that standardized, one-size-fits-all settlement offers "are not well suited to the full range of conservation easement cases." But it didn’t stop there. The creation of the new Office of Conservation Easements was also announced — giving hope to many that the wrongs of the past will finally be addressed in a deliberate, fair manner.
One of this administration’s best, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, deserves credit for his willingness to take a pause, look closer at these complex cases, and potentially implement corrective action to address serious questions about a law that has been around for decades. This was not an easy move to make, but it is the right one.
For decades, more than a quarter of a million American taxpayers have preserved pristine land and prevented development through legal conservation easement donations on the professional advice of expert geologists, land managers, thousands of credentialed lawyers, CPAs, and certified appraisers — to name a few. But those law-abiding taxpayers, who listened to the advice of experts, have been treated by non-experts at the IRS as a single undifferentiated class of common criminals.
The IRS has been threatening billions of dollars in tax bills — even to honest taxpayers who played by the rules.
It’s become a political football, and a fair resolution needs to be reached quickly.
The Tax Court's docket remains intact and backlogged, and if hearings started today, they wouldn’t be completed for about 10 years. Knowing this, the IRS is still pushing taxpayers to make expensive court appearances.
Despite the creation of the new Office of Conservation Easements to adjudicate these cases, program participants continue to move toward trial with no fair settlement in sight. These cases routinely produce inconsistent outcomes in court, with judges sustaining a large share of a claimed deduction in one case while all but zeroing out comparable claims in others. The taxpayers are still caught in a game of Russian roulette.
Detailed reviews of these cases show valuations are often done behind a desk at the IRS by people who never visit the property in question, nor do they possess any knowledge or expertise in the field in which they are operating.

The Treasury is rightly trying to root out fraudulent land appraisals, as they should.
But they are casting a very wide net that too often ensnares both the fraudsters and the law-abiding taxpayers in the same net. The good news is that the Office of Conservation Easements has the potential to look past the IRS's faulty, deeply flawed, one-size-fits-all, foregone conclusions model and instead build a systematic process to evaluate property value based on objective and verifiable data on land values.
For all the program’s shortcomings, Congress and federal government agencies spent sixty years building the conservation easement program and encouraging Americans to use it. In fact, when the issue was revisited several times along the way, the tax deductions were not stopped; they were enhanced.

By all means, go after those who have defrauded taxpayers. But fix the program. By all means, fix the land appraisal system so that the tax cheats can be exposed. But stop punishing those who played by the rules.
This can be achieved by using independent valuation and appraisal specialists, land-use and conservation experts, geologists, and other parties with direct, ground-level familiarity with the real value of properties put into conservation. This would help expose bad actors who committed fraud and protect those taxpayers who followed the law.
Too often the Biden administration weaponized the IRS by adding tens of thousands of new agents. Eliminating what supporters called IRS witch hunts was a clear promise that Trump campaigned on. This is a good opportunity to stand and deliver on tax fairness.
It’s good policy and good politics.
